Winter weather can wreak havoc on your hair. During the winter months, many people have dry, dull, brittle hair. The tips below will help you keep your hair more healthy during winter months.
Do not shampoo your hair too often. One of the most common mistakes people make is shampooing their hair too often. In cold weather, both the hair and scalp dry out more easily. Try not to shampoo your hair more than thrice a week.
Use the right type of products. The type of products you use on your hair will make a big difference in the overall health of your hair.
Do not overuse your hairdryer. Overusing your hairdryer will contribute to dry damaged hair. Try to blow dry your hair as little as possible. When you use your hairdryer, try using the 'cool' setting. Drying your hair with cool air may take a little longer but it will do less damage to your hair.
Dry & Brittle Hair. A leave-in conditioner will work wonders for dry and brittle hair.

    Some more tips:
    • Wear a scarf, hat or cap to protect your hair from the cold and wind. Make sure the scarf, hat or cap is not so tight that it will restrict circulation in your scalp. Continually wearing hats can lead to overworked sebaceous glands, resulting in limp, greasy locks.
    • Lock in hair moisture by running your hair through cold water.
    • Limit your use of curling irons.
    • Shampoo your hair in warm or cool water.
    • Give yourself a hot oil treatment to deep condition your hair. Warm oil penetrates the hair shaft making the hair more flexible and giving it shine. This can also help to prevent split ends which result from dry hair.
    • Massage your scalp to help stimulate hair growth. Massaging helps stimulate hair growth by increasing the blood flow to the scalp. This nourishes the hair roots and helps to stimulate the hair growth process.
    • Essential oils such as rosemary, Lavender and tea tree are naturally antiseptic and help to fight dandruff. Vegetable oils such as soybean oil, safflower oil and corn oil are moisturizing and conditioning to the hair shaft.
    • Condition your hair every time you wash it. If your hair is dry, use a rich conditioner. If your hair is oily, you should choose a lighter conditioner or apply only on the length of the hair, avoiding the scalp area.
    • Deep condition your hair every week. This is done by purchasing a special hair conditioning packet which can be found at most department stores or drug stores. The packet holds enough conditioner for one application. Wash your hair as you normally would. Then apply the condition all over your hair (avoiding the scalp area if you have oily hair). Wrap a towel around your hair or place a shower cap on your head, covering your entire hair length. Allow the conditioner to set on your hair for five to ten minutes. Rinse with cool water.
    • Eat right and consider taking vitamin and mineral supplements to encourage healthy hair. Several vitamins and minerals have been shown to help hair growth and condition including biotin, vitamin E, vitamin B, vitamin C and MSM.
    • If you have extra curly hair, avoid brushing your hair. Use a wide toothed comb, or your fingers to work with your hair. Brushes can extra curly hair by shearing it out of the scalp.
    • If your hair ends are damaged, give yourself a trim every so often to remove damage.
