In this world, self-minded people run around chasing their endless desires. Whatever they get seems less. The desire for wealth, comfort, and luxuries never get fulfilled. The desires are infinite. It’s like a deep empty vessel without any bottom.

So, these infinite longings make people wander in this materialistic world and they destroy themselves under their influence.
    Coming to GITA
    manah-prasadah saumyatvam
    maunam atma-vinigrahah
    bhava-samsuddhir ity etat

And satisfaction, simplicity, gravity, self-control and purification of one’s existence are the austerities of the mind.

To make the mind austere is to detach it from sense gratification. It should be so trained that it can be always thinking of doing good for others. The best training for the mind is gravity in thought. One should not deviate from Krishna consciousness and must always avoid sense gratification. To purify one’s nature is to become Krishna conscious. The more we think of sense enjoyment, the more the mind becomes dissatisfied. In the present age we unnecessarily engage the mind in so many different ways for sense gratification, and so there is no possibility of the mind’s becoming satisfied.

The best course is to divert the mind to the Vedic literature, which is full of satisfying stories, as in the Puranas and the Mahabharata. One can take advantage of this knowledge and thus become purified. The mind should be devoid of duplicity, and one should think of the welfare of all. Silence means that one is always thinking of self-realization.Control of the mind means detaching the mind from sense enjoyment. One should be straightforward in his dealings and thereby purify his existence. All these qualities together constitute austerity in mental activities.

Diverting their mind to Vedic literature, Puranas and Mahabharata? Mahabharata has Gita in which Krishna tells Arjuna "
Destroy your enemies, o, Partha and enjoy the world" The whole epic is about those mrunning after gratification of power, be it the Kauravas or Pandavas.

    Dear Smt. Jayasala:

Wonderful presentation of how one's life should be conducted to achive bliss! The nature of the senses is such that once one of it's desire is fulfilled, it goes after another. The mind becomes subservient to the senses. Traditionally, scriptures suggest that hierarchy to be followed is Atma gives direction to the intellect, intellect gives direction to the mind, and the mind gives direction to the senses. The sufferings one undergoes is because the mind is subservient to the senses.

Mind should become a receiver like a radio and don't get indulged in senses going after worldly desires. That detachment purifies the mind. The mind's absorption in the scriptures does help in right-living unless the man already has encrypted principles already due to prior life experiences. The life is a gift only for the purpose of Self-realization or understanding who we really are. Our thinking we are the body and mind is the reason for sufferings.
