Going Raw to lose weight :-)

    The story of my life and weight
    Hello everyone. I am a 24 year old woman battling the most common problem plaguing the world today, which is obviously weight gain and loss. For starters, I have always been a heavy person, as a child, I was the heaviest girl in the class, hated my weight, life and always questioned myself and god why I was this huge. When I hit teens my weight gain increased by mammoth proportions, by the time I hit 16, I weighed in at 200 pounds (90 kg) my height being 5’4. My parents’ major concern was who would marry a gigantic person such as me. The worst part of all this was no one including me knew why I was gaining so much weight. I ate like a normal person, did not gorge on food like there was no tomorrow. My parents brought us up the right way, no junk food food at home, no eating out, so even to this day I am not a fan of fast food. It used to suck seeing other people would eat the same amount of food I ate and maintain their weight and I would gain weight just looking at the food. Belonging to a south indian family did not help matters either. Eating rice for lunch and dinner, coupled with a few rotis, was practically the diet we ate. As the norm goes, all my aunties, relatives used to give me tips on weight loss, my friends felt bad for me, my father used to remind me every day that I was ballooning and that no one would marry me, but quite frankly none of this affected me at that time as if I think about it now, I was just a kid. I didn’t have the maturity to see that that kind of weight was horrendous for my health and life. And I could not really understand why I was gaining that weight when my eating habits were normal like everyone else who belonged to my age group. Then the turning point arrived ,I don’t want to discuss the event, and no it was not somebody commenting me on my weight, which didn’t matter anyways, as I had been hearing that all my life. I promised myself that I would lose the weight and prove to everyone that I can do this.
    Changed the diet completely, stopped eating rice and stuck to rotis, started exercising and did all the right things for the next two years to get down to 143 pounds (65kg). You would ask me what the problem is now that I have lost that much weight. Well no matter how hard I try to lose more weight, the scale seems to be stuck at that number. The minimum I have weighed is 140 pounds. The truth is my body has found its happy weight which was the weight I was also happy with up until recently. Before I go further a bit on my background, even though I was born in India, I have lived in Canada all my life. That being said, not to sound prudish, the most criticism I get on my weight is when we visited India. There is so much obsession with weight that a woman has to be stick thin to be termed in shape. I do feel that North America does accept people who are a bit curvy as opposed to Indians (I don’t want to offend anyone here). Anyways I got married last year and moved to UK. I have suddenly begun to feel fat again, partly, as all my friends are skinnier than me. None of them know my weight issues, so sometimes, probably unintentionally am reminded by them that I still have some weight to lose. They give me tips on losing weight when they have never faced weight issues in their lives. Now I can’t go on bragging about my weight loss with everyone, so I keep quite. The child in me has surfaced back again. Now that I have come so far, I know I can complete the rest of the journey, break the plateau, lose 20 pounds, and never again in my life, let others tell me I have weight to lose.
    So the problem is that to maintain this current weight I follow a very strict diet as I tend to gain weight very easily. Now to lose the last 20 pounds, I have decided to embark on a journey of raw food diet for the next two months as according to my experience this is a very safe and effective way of weight loss. I need all the support I can get thanks to this wonderful forum. I will keep everyone posted on what I eat and drink on the days to come by and thus hold myself accountable for my actions :)...:):)

    Even i have heard thru my yogi friends about raw foods it would be nice of you if oyu can share some raw food receipies for all our ILS here..

    hi dear,
    i also read in some site that raw food makes u to loose faster than
    the cooked food,some research was done on farm animals and they lost weight very fast when given raw veges.
    i will also try this as i also put on weight very easily.
    thanks for sharing your story.

    I just saw this thread and was reading your post. I can identify with you. The surprise was when you mentioned my name. Thanks honey for being that sweet. The point is when the body reaches the lowest it gives such a tough time to shed those last few pounds. I am working out like hell watching my food consumption and where I stand now, 64.5 kgs. Horrible simply horrible.

    I have also adopted a strategy but its not raw. I just stir fry my veggies. So, hands cross things will show up.

    You are a rock star girl. Coming to 65 kgs from 90 kgs deserves a clap.Soon you gonna be size zero.

    for your success story...I have heard that eating raw is the best thing for body...not for taste...

    One of my frd tried this and lost 15 kg within 2-3 months time...

    It will work for u as well...

    If we loose weight on this raw food diet,will we gain when we eat normal foods?Cant follow this method life long.What about nutrition?Will we get all vitamins ,minerals,protein from this diet.Please clarify..

    Sometimes we have to delve into the unknowns to achieve the our goals and dreams. Monday, June 28<sup>th</sup> was the first day of the raw diet. Yesterday was hard partly because I had to buy, organize and plan the modus operandi. [FONT=&quot]Today being my second day on the diet, I feel very good and quite energetic as well. Yesterday I had tons of vegetables and fruits for breakfast and lunch. For dinner I made a delicious smoothie of blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, banana, yogurt and milk. I haven’t given up my coffee yet. I use no fat milk and no sugar for the coffee. Started drinking green tea which am not a big fan of. Today was almost the same deal. For dinner I had a huge bowl of salad, made a salad dressing of one tablespoon extra virgin olive oil and 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar, salt and pepper. Turned out okay. The one thing that has been hard is giving up coffee, but as I get my calcium and protein from non-fat milk I don’t feel that guilty. Soaked some moong dal to make sprouts, have never ever made sprouts before. Will have to wait for atleast 2 days to see if the method is working. Planning to introduce new foods as we go along through the week. [/FONT]
    The reason this diet is considered a healthy and safe way to lose weight is because we are not depriving the body of the nutrients it needs in order to carry out its daily activities. The human body requires carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and nutrients to function effectively. Fruits and vegetables we consume on this diet provide us with carbohydrates we need. As for the protein, along with milk, we can make sprouts using moong dal, chick peas or any other kinds of lentil and beans which are all a high source of protein. For fats, avocado is an excellent source of monounsaturated fats which are heart healthy fats. Using olive oil for salad dressing is also a good way to introduce good fats into our diets. Fruits and vegetables contain enormous amounts of vitamins and minerals. Spinach is single most important leafy vegetable, a high source of iron and folic acid, two minerals that are very important for a woman’s body. Berries contain tons of antioxidants which help the body cleanse of impurities and prevent cancers and heart diseases. We can have dairy products on this diet, but make sure you use only fat free versions as milk and its counterparts contain high amounts of saturated fats which clog the arteries, increase cholesterol and lead to heart diseases. Calcium is necessary for the bones and blood, avoiding dairy products would lead to the loss of calcium in the bones, which is not what we want as women, as women need [FONT=&quot]1000 to 1200 mg of calcium, much more than their men counterparts, as we go through hormonal changes all our lives. The only issue of this diet would be the absence of B-vitamins, such as B12 as it is not present in fruits and vegetables, source being meat products. However this problem is faced by a majority of vegetarians, such as myself who have to take B complex supplements to counteract B vitamin deficiency. It is recommended that we take multivitamin and B vitamin supplements while on this diet as no matter how hard we try some of the essential nutrients get missed out.[/FONT]
    Sansam as with any diet, once we are off it, we should form good food habits to maintain our weight. Yes once off the diet we would gain 2 to 3 pounds of the weight lost, as it would mostly be water weight as we have been off salt for the time period and salt absorbs water. other than that, just sensible eating might keep weight gain from bay :)
