I might be joining here soon. I don't have an official diagnosis yet, but my GTT values were abnormal. I've been self monitoring for a few days and have found that fasting values are very hard to control. They are most affected by the hormonal imbalance that takes place during the night. You will have to experiment with a few different methods to see what works for you.

    1. Try eating 1 or 2 ounces of pasteurized cheese, peanut butter or chicken, along with one whole wheat cracker as a nighttime snack, but not too close to bedtime. Basically anything high in protein with a little bit of carbs.
    2. Try to exercise (a 20 minute walk) after your last meal.
    3. Make sure you are not testing too soon. Test your fasting levels between 10-12 hours of your last meal.

Fasting levels are at the mercy of our body so we can't control them as effectively as the rest of readings. If nothing works medicine might be the way to go.

I'm almost 28 weeks Pooja. Dr confirmed GD today. I will be seeing a nutritionist in a few days. Until then I will keep self-monitoring. How many times a day do you monitor your blood glucose?

sorry to hear that Gauri...take care..we can do this!

i check my glucose levels 4 times a day...once while fasting....and the rest of three times one hr after breakfast, lunch and dinner.for fasting my doc is very keen for the glucose level to be below 90..and the one hr after breakfast, lunch and dinner should be below 130.

she gave me a diet chart to follow...its a good one...but fasting levels were hard for me to manage.

dont worry dear...it will all be fyn!

Don't worry Chitra. I'm sure you will be fine. Now that I look back I had a few clear symptoms, like persistent headaches, quick weight gain and extreme fatigue after meals. My doctor is not very worried and told me it can be controlled with diet alone. Anyway, its too early for you to get GD. Just keep doing what you're doing and things will be okay.

Pooja, Did you get your fasting under 90? I've been trying and the best I've managed is 93. Other numbers are also very susceptible to changes in food. Even minor changes cause huge spikes. Do you measure the amount of carbs you eat per day? Also, any good ideas for between-meals snacks? I used to eat fruits and nuts, now I don't know if that is okay.

    hi gauri,

no i cudnt get my fasting levels under 90...actually to be frank i havnt tried much either...the nurse had suggested me to have just a protein snack minus starch for snack after dinner time..i did it once..then found it to be too tolling..as i have my exam coming up in sep..and my sleep pattern is very haphazard for now..so i just opted for medication..and she gave me glyburide half a tab vit dinner snack..i m doing well on it...rest of day time levels were under control.

if you have the time,to decrease fasting level have some chicken or a cup of paneer before you sleep..walk for 15 mins too before you retire to bed..and dont stay hungry for long when you wake up..

my rest of the diet plan is pretty good..as i am not deprived of anything and portion control is the key.

for breakfast i have 2 eggs minus the yolk with mushrooms, spinach and cheese..and a slice of bread.you can have 1 egg muffin,1 wheat bagel,1 cup paneer with 1 roti..basically its 1 starch and 1 protein.

then snack after breakfast has to be just protein and starch..no fruit or milk...so i eat peanut butter spread on rice cake..because i have celiac disease you will see i incorporate a lot of rice items in my diet..

for lunch i can have 2 proteins 1 starch 1 fat 1 cup of milk...i just have 1/3rd cup of rice...1cup daal n 1 cup chicken..basically high protein low carb diet.you can also have paneer variations instead of chicken.

then i have a post lunch snack after 2 hrs..i am supposed to have 1 protein 1 starch 1 fruit and cup of milk...i sometimes have low fat lite icecream which has less sugar in a cone...or yougurt cup..or cheese strings with 7-8 crackers..or hummus dip with crackers...

then for dinner same as lunch.

post lunch snack its either just 1 protein 1 starch or 1 fruit n cup of milk...i just have some cherries..n yougurt...cherries too counted..like 13 i believe.

and milk need to be low fat everytime.or the 2% we get here.

    hope it helps you out!

Thanks Pooja. I will try your tips. This GD business is really kicking my butt. :( The same amount of carbs eaten in different forms leads to vastly different numbers. Half a mini-bagel with 10 gms carbs spikes my sugar more than half a cup of oats with 20 gms carbs! And potatoes might as well be a cup of pure sugar! I'm just so frustrated with this that I've taken time off work to get this thing under control.
