Hi all
:wave
Lets play a game about all the food items we use daily in our kitchen, like dals, fruits, vegetables, greens, drinks and also non-veg items. Lets know the protein content, vitamins, their caloriefic values, dishes that can be made with the item etc. Lets share what ever we know with others.

Let me start with one item, and I would suggest the next item for the person who will follow me, so that everyone will have a chance to know about the food that we all eat.

Eat healthy be healthy.

Le me start with Tomatoes - which is a excellent source of vitamin C and good source of vitamin A.
Tomatoes provide the body with lycopene, a valuable source of nutrition. Lycopene has shown that it prevents damage to the cells causing cancers of many types. These include colon cancer, prostate cancer prevention, and also breast cancers. It is the folate mineral inside of a tomato that helps to ward off these cancers.
Tomatoes are also strong in niacin, which is a vitamin that is water soluble. Niacin lowers cholesterol and triglycerides, so a healthy low fat diet that is rich in tomato sources should significantly lower your blood lipid levels.

Tomatoes carry chromium too. Chromium is a mineral which helps to lower your blood sugar levels as well as certain types of migraine headaches.

Tomatoes contain vitamin K. Vitamin K is helpful to bone health.

As you all know tomatoes can be used in soups, sabjies, rasam etc.

Next person can post about Palak

carrot
Carrots are excellent for the eyes.

Carrots are also good for the skin.

Beta carotene is an anti-oxidant

Carrots contains large quantities of vitamin A, in the form of beta carotene.

Juicing a carrot removes the indigestible fiber. Thus, the nutrients in it are available to the body in much larger quantities than if the carrot was eaten whole. This is because many of the nutrients are trapped in the fibre, and while fibre aids digestion, some part of the fibre is indigestible. Thus, you don't get the benefits of the nutrients that are trapped in the indigestible fibre. Did you know that if you eat a carrot raw, you only get access to about 1% of the available beta carotene? But, when you or your child has a glass of carrot juice, you your system absorbs almost 100% or the beta carotene!

NEXT : apple

Let me continue .....

• One medium banana contains 1.29 grams of protein, 105 calories and 3.1 grams of dietary fiber.
• There are over 300 varieties of bananas worldwide and is eaten around the world. Bananas have a history going back to around 500 BC. Alexander the Great mentions it in his conquests. In early Greek civilizations bananas were call the "food of the wise."
• A full stalk of bananas can weigh as much as 150 pounds.
• Bananas are rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium phosphorus and iron. They are also a good source of Vitamins A and C as well as thiamine, riboflavin and niacin.
• Bananas also contain all 8 essential amino acids.
• Bananas are a good fuel for the brain because the potassium helps you concentrate and think clearer. Potassium is perhaps the best fuel for the brain.
• Bananas are rich in fiber, which absorbs water giving you a full feeling - great for those trying to lose weight.
• Rich in magnesium (helps protect circulatory system), potassium and slowly-absorbed sugars. Good source of pectin (a soluble fiber). Prevents radical swings in blood sugar.
Tips: To get green bananas to ripen faster place them in a paper bag. To store the bananas longer keep them cool but not cold.
Fruit contain natural sugars. These sugars stimulate the brain so we can think faster and recall information more quickly. Thus fruit along with raw carrots are excellent food sources to eat prior to engaging in any strenuous mental activity.

SOYA:-

Indians being predominantly vegetarian may need to add some food components to boost their protein content and health status. The simplest and the easiest option available to meet the protein needs is to add soybean in your daily diet. Compared to other pulses and legumes, soy has almost double the amount of protein. Just about a serving (30 gms) of soybean provides almost similar amount of protein as obtained from non-vegetarian food items. Soybean is available in different forms like soy flour, soy dal, soy drink, soy nuggets, granules and tofu. However, in India soy nuggets and granules seem to be more popular compared to other forms. There’s no doubt that soybean is an unmatched legume with high quality protein, low saturated fat, no cholesterol and huge amounts of isoflavones/ phytoestrogens- the disease fighting nutrients in soybean. The excessive processing involved in the formation of soy nuggets and granules robs them of most of these benefits. Soy nuggets are manufactured from the by- products available after soybean oil extraction. Due to the exposure to high temperature and loss of essential fatty acids along with fat-soluble vitamins and minerals thus depleting soy nuggets of their nutritional value.

<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />SOYBEAN AND GENERAL HEALTH
Soybean has been rightly called as the golden Bean as along with its rich nutritional composition it also has therapeutic benefits. The special therapeutic components are isoflavones, phytoesterogens- the disease fighting nutrients of soybean, unique protein composition, its calcium content and essential fat (omega-3 fatty acids) content. Isoflavones are thought to reduce a wide array of chronic degenerative diseases.

OBESITY AND SOYABEAN: Soyabean has a special place for weight watchers. With its exceptionally high satiety value i.e. the fullness it creates coupled with a low glycemic index, even small quantities of soy added to the diet can make a big difference to appetite control. Besides this being loaded with nutrition it is a high nutrient low calorie food.
DIABETES AND SOYBEAN: The only agent, which has been found to reverse diabetic and kidney diseases (nephropathy) is soybean. Soybean is a useful addition to a diabetic diet as it has an exceptionally low glycemic index, which helps in blood sugar management.
CANCER AND SOYBEAN: Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the West, however the developing nations are not far behind. Several studies have shown that populations consuming higher amounts of soybeans are protected against cancer and many other chronic diseases compared to their counterparts consuming very little or no soybean.
