I am not the best communicator and perhaps, I didn't respond well to the question from @Gauri03.

Agreed that COVID-19 (otherwise known as SARS-COV-2) is different than SARS and MERS but I had only mentioned it is from the same family based on this information. New coronavirus stable for hours on surfaces

Again, I am not a great communicator. I wasn't blaming the researchers but those who consumed the same animals knowing they may have viruses that the human immune system can't handle. Maybe I am wrong.

In any eco(nomic) system, yep, that's how it works. :greedy: World is finally waking up from the denials I guess. Some gif cheers for times like these.

The components of language: syntax, semantics, morphology, phonetics, and pragmatics.

It is that final component pragmatics, at times, unobvious in speech. To solve this problem, a listener needs to make a pragmatic inference about the intentions of the speaker. Pragmatics is the study of goal, intent, context in an utterance.

Viswa's context was broader in the post, so he worded his intent as "family", belongs to that family, as in, under that family. Kkrish, you might have worded your finer context slightly agreeably as: " Yes, same family, as an entirely new species that we did not know about earlier." Shifting the dominant negation, at the beginning, to the thereafter distinction in your intent.

For more on patterns of intent and communication gaps, here's a fun clip: the context of other minds

Yes @Novalis The triangle image is the science of classification, known as taxonomy.

I don't know how to respond, what to respond.

Perhaps your post was just an observation, expecting no response. So I'll leave it at that.

The above sentence is a great learning experience for me. My reading and understanding are intense (mostly I do a light reading) subject to my level of interest on a specific topic and hence I have to admit that goal, intent, context in an utterance are mostly not captured by my brain. Now, I have to do corrections in that habit. If I push back on something, it is mostly because of my lack of understanding of another viewpoint more than "I can't be wrong" attitude. I am also a poor communicator in English as my language skill is limited. Looking back, if I had done what you have suggested above, I would have handled many things differently in the past.

I work and socialise with bohemian minds playfully observant of communication kinks, from the pinpricks to the potholes of everyday lapses. I get commented/inquired left, right, torn in the middle like Jarasandha, about intent and wording, another lesser mortal in my place would have been traumatised but I am only amused of that interest in others to groom me, finessing my natural instincts for language. Try as I might, I can never claim that authority in me.

Asked, I would respond to my own post in jocularity: "Hehe! After the broad and fine, the ultimate context would be the strain induced by the family. (punning at the lowest level 'strain' in the taxonomy below the 'species' and 'family').

That is my environment, of study, of work, and activity with friends.

But you are right. Observation aloud! That's it.

I timeout in conversations when I sense irreconcilable depths. Only after levelled, or one subsuming the other, the conversation resumes, I know you parked your argument here, but my axis is at two meters from yours, which means my coordinates are relative to yours. (Sometimes I talk like this, too.)

I have been fortunate in my life to have been observed. I am relentlessly clipped when I stray in conversations, magnifying the wording and devaluing the intent, that a day with no insightful theory on my communication lapses would worry me of losing their interest in my deviance. What?! Nothing wrong with me today?! With time, I honoured charity in wording (others have different vocabulary), I sensed consistency in intent (others are trying to say the same thing) when the literal sense of the word is relaxed for a representative sense of it.

You are both partially correct, with some imprecision thrown in.

COVID-19 is the disease (Coronavirus Disease-19).
The virus causing COVID-19 is SARS-CoV-2.

SARS-CoV-2 is an entirely new virus. Not officially classified in the 2018 listing of the International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). In 2018, the ICTV listed 12 species of Betacoronaviruses. Now there are 13.

SARS-CoV-2 belongs to the same Genus (Betacoronavirus) as SARS-CoV (commonly called SARS) and MERS.

SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV are two distinct species that belong to the same subgenus - Sarbecovirus.
MERS is a species that belongs to a different subgenus - Merbecovirus.

These relationships are derived from who is closest to whom genetically. SARS-CoV-2 is closest to SARS-CoV, and a bit more distant from MERS.

Of the 13 Betacoronaviruses identified, 4 are now known to infect humans: SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, MERS, and HKU1. The remaining 8 infect various animal species.

There are only about 5-6000 viruses known. Statistical estimates of the unknown Virosphere range from 320,000 to millions or trillions (if bacteriophage are included).

~1400 human pathogens are known (including bacteria, viruses, fungi, worms, etc.). Of these, ~219+1 (our new friend!) are virus species.

The first human pathogenic virus discovered was the Yellow Fever Virus, in 1901.

I am sure this is more than you wanted to know, but then, there it is!

This is the original question from @Gauri03.
