We are 2 people with bathrooms (irrespective of who has an attached one) W1 already has enough privacy to have her own bathroom. She already has an advantage. Whats wrong if her guests have to pass the entire apartment to reach a bathroom. Let them. They are guests. All her guests must use HER bathroom. If i were W2 i would not be ok with my bathroom being used by anyone else other than me or my guests.
If w2 has kept her personal stuff in the bathroom then a strict no, else no harm. If w1 wants her guests to use w2 bathroom then rent should be comparatively lesser. What if some guests keeps a hidden camera in w2/bathroom?
When I had a roommate, I was W2. My roommate and I ended up becoming friends, but there was a unspoken understanding that her guests would use her bathroom. The floorplan was also set up in a way to make it easy to understand - my room and bathroom were situated together on one side, and her room was closer to the entrance. There would have been a lot of confusion if the bedrooms were side-by-side and the bathroom was right beside them.
A casual search on the internet shows that it is not discussed usually and catches roommates by surprise the first time the issue comes up.
Question was: If you were W2, would you be fine with your bathroom also serving as guest bathroom? Those who said no, what would be the reason? Privacy? You don't want strangers in your bathroom, and possibly getting to see your stuff like toiletries? You are messy, and don't want that to become public knowledge? : ) Or the "yuck factor? For me, it is mainly the yuck factor. I wouldn't mind so much anyone getting to see what toiletries I use : ). The issue would be having to clean a bathroom used by others. People who are not roommates and hence not subject to prior agreements about bathroom cleanliness. And if the cleaning needed to happen in the middle of the week when a cleaning was not due, then problem is bigger. When I had roommates, we were lucky to get the unusual floor plan of both bedrooms having detached bathrooms. Still, on occasion her friends needed to use my bathroom. If these were guys, I used to get really pissed. : ) : ) If they stand and pee, splashback means a fine layer of pee covers the bathroom floor or (even worse) the bath rug around the potty. That needs to be washed separately from other laundry, and washer-dryer are a long walk, plus cost for each load. Issue compounded by the fact that most of us go around barefoot inside the apartment/house.
Same here. Yuck factor is the reason. Some people don't know how to use the bathroom without making a mess.
I am your baap when it comes to toilets. I avoid using public toilets, and I am equally stringent about my personal toilet. Last visit, our maid was laughingly conveying to me that my mom prohibits everyone from using my toilet even though I visit once in a year. Mommie warns: That’s Ira toilet. No one should use it but clean it everyday. The maid thought my mom was a specimen. I never corrected or pointed her to the bonafide specimen of the family.
