With Love from the land of Ramanujan* *With the help of mathematics I will predict how many siblings you have.* Try it. You will have a hard time believing it. 1. First, count the number of your brothers in your mind. 2. Add 2 to that number. 3. Now multiply the resulting number with 2. 4. Add 1 to it. 5. Then multiply it by 5. 6. Add the number of your sisters to it. 7. Deduct 25 from the in resulting number. 8. Now you will get a number with two digits. The first digit represents the number of brothers while the second represents the number of sisters. *Shocked??..* The tenth digit is the number of your brother siblings and the single digit onthe right hand side denotes the number of sisters . It is revealed that we are adding the number of sisters .Adding and deducting 25 will have nil effect. So. one can easily say the right hand digit is the number of sister siblings Even if. you have no brothers 25 will be the answer and if you deduct 25 the remaining digit will show the number of sisters If you have10 brothers and nil sisters 125 will be the answer. if you have no siblings at all you will get 25 and deduct 25, 0 will be the answer We find for every brother the answer increases by 10 that is to 35,45,55 While we are shocked with the correctness of the answer,we also observe the following. If x is the number of brothers and y is the number of sisters, the equation after the calculations in steps 1-7 is 10x+y. It will work but only as long as y is less than 10. When y is equal to or greater than 10, the equation goes haywire (say 1 brother and 10 sisters will lead to a score of 20 which is incorrect). I felt that the problem composer should have clearly stipulated that the number of brothers and sisters should be in single digit only. Some Maths stalwarts point out that step 8 of the question itself says "Now you will get a number with two digits. The first digit represents the number of brothers while the second represents the number of sisters. " This itself is a tacit way of telling that the siblings should be in single digit only. But if I have three brothers and ten sisters then I get the answer as 40,a two digit number that is totally wrong. The problem finds a place in Google also. Even now I feel that the question is incorrect. The condition should be specific . What do you say friends? Jayasala 42
