are they some kind of fertilizer loaded studs that were planted into the stems ?
And not bullets shot from a gun to pierce through the tree ?

If armies could develop bullets that can be implanted into the stems of soldiers in rival warring factions, and these bullets are designed to put some sense into the soldiers, we'd have no battles, no deaths and the stupidity everywhere before, during and after the wars.
