    Hi Ladies,

My recent check up showed that I have iron deficiency and have been advised to take iron supplements.

Instead of taking the supplements I would like to include more iron rich food in my diet as that will also improve my iron levels.

I know that beetroot is a vegetable that's good in iron levels.
Not sure about other vegetables though...

Pls share your knowledge in this.

    thanks!

One tip to recognize iron-rich foods :any food which turns black when cut and left exposed to air is rich in iron. So apples, bananas, the inflorescence of banana, stem of banana etc. are very iron rich. This is in addition to all the information you have already got.

Make these a part of your daily diet:

    1. A handful of spinach steamed with moong dal
    2. Few drumsticks - just steamed with little salt

For the body to absorb Iron into the blood, Vitamin C is essential.

I would suggest taking Vitamin C supplement for a while (if you have any other medical condition, please consult your doctor before taking supplements)

Also include foods that are rich in Vitamin C

The combination would help to bring up the heamoglobin level

To my knowledge Dates are rich in iron. I tried for my daughter who had low hemoglopin. Before taking dates, she checked her hemo level. After taking four or five dates with a glass of milk daily for ten days considerably increased her level of hemo. you can try that too. Natural iron content.

    Hi satchi,
Didn't know about the above information before. Anyways, I love bananas so will continue with them.

    faith,

just wanted to add. cook the moong and then add the spinach just torn with your hands..do not cut.. and just cook until it is done..this way you retain more of the minerals..

As i already mentioned in another thread, wheatgerm juice is high source of iron so is asparagus.

    Satchi, that's really good info.
I'm giving dates, fig, apricot and milk shake of them to my son.
Also peaches are very high iron source.
