    Father’s Day Special
On Sunday, 20th this month (20/06/2021)world celebrated Father’s Day. Though it was being celebrated in the USA since 1910 but officially sealed in 1966 when US president L B Johnson announced the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day In 1972, it was declared a National Holiday by Nixon Administration.
However, as far as I can remember, we became aware of it sometimes in the 21st Century only, to be precise somewhere around 2000.
I am reminded of a true incident which I wish to detail as a story.

Daya Ram has been falling ill off and on after the death of is wife five years back. One of the relations next door serves the meals. Dayal has three sons. The eldest Ramesh lives in Mumbai, the second Umesh in Canada and the youngest Mahesh in Dubai. So, money wise, he has no problem. He himself is a pensioner. Sons are married and have children.

Every time he fell ill, he thought he would not survive, he called his sons and all came running in the beginning. Then they stared wishing him get well soon and of course, Happy Father’s Day every year.

This time, his neighbor informed the eldest son in Mumbai that he was really serous and doctors are also not much hopeful. Ramesh came immediately.

Doctors were doing their best but condition was deteriorating day by day. Ramesh called his brothers to come and have last Darshan. Also Father’s Day was around. Both of them reached within a week.

Seeing all of his sons home, Dayal was very happy. His body was weak but heart full with happiness. Father’s day was celebrated. It looked Daya will survive.

In the evening, brothers were having good time, sipping the Canadian Whiskey brought by Umesh. Umesh gave one sip to his father saying enjoy Dad!

While enjoying their drinks, Umesh said:

I sincerely pray God not to trouble Dad anymore. Death is inevitable, we all have to go one day. See, it is not that easy to come from Canada at such short notice. There are procedures and it costs hell of a money.

Mahesh nodded in agreement and said:

You are right, bro. There are more problems in Dubai. Difficult to get leaves. Buggers, keep passports with them.

Ramesh kept quiet. What could he say? He too has problems but……

Daya was weak but his mind was alert. He heard it all. In his heart, he agreed they are so right.

All went to bed and slept.

In the morning Daya was motionless. They tried to shake him up, but in vain. Declared dead.

Last rites were performed. Sons returned with big sigh of relief.

    Happy Father’S DAY.

May be true that sons have their problems. But still there was a lump in the throat after reading it. One has to go through a lot of guilt trip later.

A thin line gets blurred of separation from offsprings. When spirit is high flesh is weak there is a longing for life.
There is Reality in story of Ramesh, Umesh & Mahesh who all are already turned dad would encounter similar scene.

    It was Father’s Day.
Three sons A,B & C were called and told by dad just before breathing last that they leave at least a lac of rupees in his coffin. To show their profound affection to dad and respect to his last wishes....
    A - a business wizard left in Dad’s casket cash ₹1,00,000.
B - a renowned heart specialist kept in casket ₹2,00,000.
C - a lawyer (Attorney) took the cash bundles of ₹ three lacs from casket and then wrote a cheque in favour of dad for ₹3,00,000 and left it in the casket .

    My Father’s Day

Once I accompanied dad to a Taylor shop situated in a central place where from its centre several radial roads branches off. He was to collect his stitched full-hand white shirts.

Shop was facing a huge statue of majestic figure Kamaraj pointing his right hand to North standing on a six feet high pedestal on the mount road is an important land mark.

Dad & I entered to the Sindhi Taylor shop. The proprietor is known to dad as the former previously employed was working as official Taylor for costumes in Gemini Studios.

The prop handed over Dad’s stitched shirts. He took out one and tried on his person. Looked in the mirror his face displayed dismay. Prop then asked him whether “shirt is ok”.

Dad didn’t respond but held taylor’s Hand walked him out of the shop and pointing his index finger to the Kamaraj statute opposite he said, “put this shirt on that statue. It will fit him well”!

    @HariLakhera Sir,
Usually, kids give gifts to mom and dad on those special days. In your story, dad gave gift to his kids on Father's Day. Sad one but it showed reality.

It happens in this practical world which also promotes Father's day. Two sides of the same coin. It is a true story and I know how the son felt. He was sorry for him and at the same time relieved too, as he would not have come on short notices again.
    Sad but true.
