True Tyagu sir, everyone fasts if only between the meals. No one goes on an eatathon unless during some crazy competitions.

Ah, Tyagu sir, when you talk of "silver grey fish anointed with massala. my mouth is watering! While otherwise an egg eating vegetarian, I just cannot resist fish! Don't be shocked if I say you missed a golden opportunity to enjjoy a great meal!Sigh, I wish I had been in your place. During my student days in Italy, the university cafeteria used top serve fish on Friday (the "fast" day of staunch Catholics for whom meat was taboo on Friday). I who had been a vegetarian all the week living on pasta, bread, fruits and cheese would turn into az carnivore that day, Ah, those were the days.

Nostalgic for me. With my college mate, I went to his native place. After serving me with just plucked tender coconut from his huge backyard, he and & I squatted for lunch. Over the pyramid of warm white rice, from a huge ladle- friend’s grandma poured sambar.

It’s aroma filled my nostril and i was ready to devour. Some round things soli glistening over the rice that the sight of which was mouth-watering.

After finishing with lunch as per village custom i was offered thamboolam. While grinding without opening my mouth it was heavenly. Grandma came enquired whether i relished the food. I was praising her sambar with generous platitudes for the solid globular part of sambar which she had served sumptuously. Then she said it is no surprise as kendai fish
    was from nearby river.

My facial expression changed and grandma noticed. My right palm felt the churning in my stomach.

Later in the evening when i was doing my sandhya vandhan, she came to know that am “பாப்பாரப்பிள்ளை” and Cursed my friend for not having informed her about my caste and my being a vegetarian.

Viswa, Ramadan fasting is preceeded and followed by a binge. Does that neutralize the effect of the fast? The breaking of the fast known as Iftar has become a social occasion and Iftar parties are held almost every day, I am yet to meet someone who stays off food during the "fast" days, Doctors say fasting goes against medical wisdom as does binging. They recommentd small meals with gaps of couple hours berween them nowadays. And remembher, those who invented the "fas" days also invented the loopholes(probably).
