    • Fabrics: The fabric is all-important. It must be durable and comfortable. Don't buy delicate fabrics that need a lot of care. Your best option would be denim. If you find a piece that is perfect for you, buy two of it. You can wear one, while the other is in the laundry. Denim is convenient to stay at home and go out in too.

    • Baby Bags: Whether you like it or not, they are going to be your prime accessories for the next year or so. Get ones that have shoulder straps and lots of pockets. A neutral colour will go with most of your outfits.

    • Shoes: Babies and stilettos don't go together. Flat shoes like sneakers and sandals are ideal for new mothers. They also go well with jeans, pants and other casuals. Make sure you pick shoes with comfortable and flexible soles. If you are addicted to heeled shoes, choose low to medium heels, preferably comfortable pumps.

    • Lactating mothers: Invest in good breastfeeding bras. This will facilitate easy feeding of the baby when you are not at home. Burp clothes are a must. These little bits of towelletes are perfect for throwing over your shoulder while burping baby or to keep ready at hand when baby might throw up. Burp clothes save your clothes from getting spoilt on many occasions.

    • Pants: Choose bottoms with drawstring or elasticised waists. Big shirts are always a good buy. They help you feel comfortable while you manage baby and your postnatal figure.

    • Maintenance: Buy clothes that are easily washable. You should be able to hand-wash or machine-wash your garments. Don't go in for material that needs to be dry-cleaned after each wear. Let's face it, you're not going to have time for such luxuries. Make things easier for yourself. Buy clothes that suit your purpose and need no special treatment.

Ruffles are a must-have, especially in your party wardrobe. Johanna Ortiz does them well. Dries Van Noten brocades are super elegant as well. For daytime, Celine and Balenciaga make some sharp suits and practical workwear. Floral dresses from Pero and Zimmermann are right on trend too.
