That is a good thing too. Especially if there is to be some inquest or investigation of a homicide after the property is returned. When inspector Poirot, or Surrender-Not Banerjee asks "are/were you a friend?", you might say "NO".
Make sure you wipe the gun clean of all finger prints before you return the item.

Its lives versus friendship...true friendship is saving the person from a grave situation, even its like bitter medicine to the friend. He will cherish your friendship after things cool off, (provided he is alive by not using the gun on himself...:eek:)

No, shouldn’t give it to him who is of unstable mind. When one is not himself and of unstable mind whatever he does will not be considered as premeditated crimes. It will be coming as someone who did things when he was mentally unstable.

We who are having clear mindset by giving a gun even if shared custody with the knowledge that we know that the friend is of unsound mind and there is potential for someone to be hurt, then we are failing in the moral obligation for the society. Depending on where one lives one should approach the legal laws for such help.

One can say directly to the friend that given that concern of mental instability, you will seek some advice with the local police before giving the gun back.

Good strategy but that raises another question. If I say NO, we are/were not friends, the Inspector will bring witnesses to confirm our friendship. It is a situation like -to be or not to be.

Had he been a case of confirmed mentally unstable person, I would not have accepted the gun in the first place or even his family would not have allowed him to handle gun. He is a person of very sound mind and I know him for years. It is only that between the period he gave the gun to me and came back to ask for it, something happened and he is agitated and full of anger.
Morally I am obliged to return his gun and at the same time ensure that he does not harm anyone or himself. That's the dilemma.

Such thinking is typical of a mental instability. Not safe for you to have a gun at home.
Return it. Your friend is probably posting somewhere asking about "having his gun in safe keeping with a friend who seems to exhibit problem behavior, and is resisting giving back the gun...what should he do?"

Search youtube for how to take out the firing pin for the make/model. This is a simple DIY project. When you are at it, also learn how to dust a gun with baby powder to look for finger prints.

    you are so right!
since we all have so time time and empathy...im also thinking what if you dont return it and just talk talk and talk ( following my advise) and return after a point ( following most people advise ). so in that entire process you please keep the balance too...you are on thin line...im mean if you have already irritated a estranged( ?) person...and now he has the gun too....you never know.

this also comes with free advise :-/

Talk to him and ask him the reason. I wouldn't even embark on the gun safekeeping mission. I would flatly refuse to keep it in the first place.
