In olden times before the child is born they never used to be ready with anything. Nothing is kept ready before the child arrives. During my sister's delivery I had gone to help her with my grandmother.
Usually in hospitals they only put dress for the new born, later only we put our dresses. But in the hospital where my sister delivered they did not give any dress for the child and we had not taken anything. so we wrapped the baby in my sister's saree. Then I went and bought everything for the child.

But now a days everything is kept ready before only. The names are also selected whether it is a boy or girl. Earlier the child was given the name of grandfather if it was a boy and thename of grandmother if it was a girl. The first boy and the first girl will be named the father's parents name and the next boy and girl the mother's parents name. But now a days those names are kept for the child but for calling different names are there and the same is given in school also. My friend has kept three names for her grandson, because she wanted some name, her daughter in law wanted some name and the parents wanted a different name. So each one calls the child according to their liking.

My another friend's son has name his son Arrav , it means peace it seems and another friend's daughter has named her daughter Abhaya means no fear.

In modern times everything has changed and we have also to live accordingly.

    Viji Ma,

You are right Ma, things have chaged a lot. Those days are gone.

I wouldn't be surprised if the new born baby starts speaking the moment it is deliverred and might say, yaeh I don't like that name.

Probably we can keep couple of moniles too along with the dress and it can start communicating immediately.

Technology has changes us a lot. Thanks Ma for sharing your thoughts.

    Hi viji Aunty!

My MIL used to tell same things like you. You are talking about modern days. But in 87 itself when I was due for delivery, since we were staying in a suburb of Chennai, we had kept an exclusive hospital bag ready, much in advance. This kit contained soft dhotis for spreading on the synthetic / rubber sheet on which the baby would lie, small jiblas for the baby and nappies stitched out of soft cotton material, one flask, horlicks, sterilised tumblers, spoons etc. On the naming front, the official name was my FIL's and as I had told you earlier, we had (esp. my Mom and FIL) had decided that we would call my son Harish (remember hariharasudhan)!!!

Nowadays ofcourse, they have a big list of names selected from the net after carefully noting their meanings too. This way, we too feel happy to call new names otherwise like olden days there would be only Natarajans, Venkateswaran, Ramanathan, Krishnan for the boys and Gowri, Bhagyam, Jayalakshmi, Easwari etc.

Dont you think it feels good to go with the present trends too aunty?

While writing this fb, I am reminded of TL's thread My name is Cow!!!!!!!

    Dear Viji Mami,

Yes everything is different in this modern world because people think if they do something differently then they will be modern. But thank god still God makes human beings and other creatures the same way as he has been doing from begining.

Think if God also starts doing things modernly. hahaha. They prepare for minor issues and are helpless in most of the major issues .hahahaha.

In olden days names were easy to keep and people used to think of childrens future and education. Now in this present day nobody would counter me if i say though names are kept modern and bags are previously packed and kept........are parents keeping the most precious thing for their children- TIME for playing with children and taking care of them.

Well i dont know if i still require time to be modern- i still love the concept of naming the children the old fashioned way and doing things a bit with traditional touch. At this point of time i am happy to reveal though my daughters are called at home differently their certificates bear their grandmom's name.I simply love the custom.

Everyone thoughts may differ- but let everyone remember ''alavukku meeri ponaal, amruthamum visham" . Hope too much of modernisation does not result in fatal issues.

    Love,
    Parvathi.

    Mami,
Change should be a part of life and from time to time. We are in a fastest growing world and everything needs to be kept ready otherwise we dont find time.
Just accepting a change is what we need to do.

    Dear Mami,

I feel its good that if we keep everything ready in advance, instead of making things in a hurry.

I agree now a days people are striving hard to keep Unique names:). As a result , sometimes they are ending up in crazy names. :)

    Dear Mallika

Goodt o know that in your delivery time only MIL kept everything ready for you. Ya we its nice to go with present trend. What you say is correct nice to have new type of names. Usually now a days they either select from the net differene tnames or take some letters from husband and some from wife and keep the name. For Gopika my husband kept her name from my sil's name which is Gopalakrishnan, so Go from his name and my daughter's name Priya so he kept Gopika. For my chidren's name kept Priya for my elder daughter as she was born after 3 years and she was pampered by everyone in our family , for my son I had prayed to Lord Vinayaka that I should get a son so kept Vinay and for myyounger daughter my husband keot Poornima means poornam anaval.

    love
