I can sense your frustration Sweta - like you, I am also in the accounting line - I have a CPA, which many of you know is similar to CA. My husband is also not in the "IT" line. Everytime we are in India - if we meet someone new and they know that we are in the US, the first question is "are you both software professionals?" duh? as if there are no other professions besides IT and when we tell them what we do - you can see that we have gone done in their eyes by a few notches! I am just amazed at how ignorant some folks are when it comes to the commerce line. There are tons of opportunities when you start with a good understanding of the business world. I work with some very intelligent people who all have a business background and are very successful. I am also proud of my accomplishments - I love what I do - working with taxes and I work in the investment field where there are challenges everyday! So - to all you ladies and girls wanting to take commerce -way to go!!!

    Dear shanvy,
Thanks for ur info.Yes commerce field is on the rise. But i would also like to tell that electronics&telecommunicatin, commerce,Accountancy are evergreen and not booming and lowering like the above.I would like to repeat my words from the previous posts

""Even in other fields,we can earn well but i feel that if u consider ten persons in IT industry atleast seven to eight among them are paid well. But for the rest of courses ,maximum of only four or five are earning a maximum salary. We cannot blindly say that growth is accomplished only in engineering, medicine .Parents, students and the so called society should atleast turn their eye to concentrate on other fields/courses too."""

    Dear shwetha,
As u said, package is also important and as shanvy said good perks are paid to commerce graduates too.But one among a few lift up.What abt others.Definitely we must look into what we are interested.Just there is growth in IT industry hence the economy is on the rise. Therefore steps must be taken that other fields ,professionals from other specialisation must also be paid well as money is a major constraint.

a person may opt for the course which he desires, but the society looks in a different way that he/she is not capable of taking up science/mathematics is something irrelevant.

Now banking has got lots of prospects and they are paying equal salary as that of the computer industry ,they are canvassing lots of professionals .ICICI bank ranks top in terms of careeer & growth.

I really feel that parents n children must speak to each other on career prospects. The parents must understand exactly wht the child wants. At times, the children may also be wrong and must be corrected.

I know of a boy who refused to attend any campus interviews while pursueing final year B.E. coz he was confident of getting a good CAT score and getting into MBA at IIM. He needed someone to explain to him that sometimes, people with even 96% in CAT dont get thru. Finally, my uncle counselled him and asked him to attend the interviews and appear for CAT at the same time. He cud always refuse the job offer at a later date if he got an MBA admission.

Its not wrong to be confident but we all live in a world of uncertainty. We might be best prepared for an exam but sometimes it just may not be our day. Sometimes, it is also possible that children go wrong. Then it is upto the parents to counsel them and ensure that the right decision is taken. So parent-child discussions must begin to avoid either from being disheartened.

Most importantly, people must know that Medicine and Engineering are not the only careers in the world ... every field requires professionalism and is therefore a career!
