Instead of letting school homework and holiday projects contribute to family stress and tension, I set about creating a happy study atmosphere where my kids felt motivated and enjoyed doing their school assignments on a day to day basis.

Revamping the Study room to make it more inviting-

    1) I invested in a comfortable and sturdy study table and chair for my kids. The earlier sofa was too soft. The light bulbs were also changed so that there was minimal eye strain while doing homework.

    2) I removed all phones, games and gadgets which would serve to be an unnecessary distraction.

    3) A cute kiddy timer was planted on the side table. My son has a habit of procrastinating and staring into space, so this timer was helpful in reminding him to keep track of things. It also helped him to focus better.

    4) I kept my laptop over here too, since I sometimes needed to research for school projects or download assignments from my son’s school portal.

    5) My sleek HP home printer was also installed in a corner of the study room. It took up minimum space and had an online app that I downloaded onto my smartphone. Myra was too young to operate this, but Aarya could print and scan wirelessly. So, he took printouts whenever he needed to submit a school project. It made homework easy and fun for him, and made the process quick and smooth. Infact, he even volunteered to help his teachers and friends with any urgent prints they needed. Learning was fun and he was glad to help everyone around him.

    6) I also put up a large calendar on the wall, where my kids could jot down things in the spaces and boxes with bright colours. This was creative, new and very thrilling for them.

    7) A homemade bird feeder was also added in the study room balcony. Alphabet bingo and a colour scavenger board game were put up for Myra. Aarya learnt making paper bags for a school science project.

Thus, I changed the mundane study room into a welcome retreat for my kids. It is now possibly the favourite room in the house for them!

Now that the ambience at home had been changed to encourage independent and positive learning, I changed my own attitude to achieve the homework goals I had set up for my children.
