Drivers license in Chicago for H4 visa holder

    I am on H4 visa living in Chicago downtown. I would like to get a driver's license. Please advise if I can get a license here without SSN.

    H4 should have TIN Number to apply for Drivers license.

    SSN is for H1 to apply for Drivers license.

    Hi vahb,
    yes you can get your driving license when on H4. You can get a SSN denial letter from the SSN office. There are about 6 offices which issue driving licenses for H4 holders. That is called TVDL (temp. visitors driving license) which is not valid for identification. You will have to give the written and road test.

    Did you get the SSN denial letter already? If not just go to a Social Security Office near your area with a ID(passport) and for address proof either your apartment lease or something that you have.
    While going for a written test(only 4 or 5 DMV offices allow H4 visa holders),take that SSN denial letter( validity is only for 1 month), passport and some other documents(I guess 2 more).There is a list of acceptable documents if you go thro' that DMV book.In case if you are short of one proof, your husband can show his driver's license.

    How long does it take for SSN office to issue SSN denial letter? Is it issued on the same day. Thanks.
