Hi, I am planning to work after a long gap. There are a couple on interviews scheduled in a couple of weeks time. This is in Perth Australia. Friends, can you please guide me with appropriate dress for the interview? I am 40, five feet in height, a bit on the heavier side(especially the lower tummy ) Can you give me tips on general grooming, co-ordinated look, footwear etc? Many Thanks!
Jaykay, First of all, all the best. I am not going to pen down the conventional tips. What do you usually wear to work? Just make the same outfit a bit more professional. Do not wear something that would make you uncomfortable just because it is suggested or it looks very professional. Same with the shoes.. wear something along the same lines that you normally wear. And same with your hair. Only when you are comfortable in your own skin, can you excel in the interview. So tell us what you wear on a regular workday and we can suggest tips around it. What is your hairstyle currently?
Thanks Radhai! I have shoulder length straight hair which i wear with a side parting. I am never comfortable or happy with my hair, i used to have thick knee length hair which is now in such a pathetic condition I wear trousers and tops to work....very casual. Flat black shoes as i am not comfortable walking/standing for long in heels. As i am short, which trouser style would be the best? Straight cut? Could you suggest a few basic must haves to get that professional look sothat i can mix and match? Thanks!
Hi jaykay All the best for your interviews. As Radhai already suggested, being comfortable yourself is more important. It will make you appear confident and keep all your concentration on the interview. For trousers I suggest instead of straight cut bootcut with long formal kurti would be ideal. Partial tied hair looks really good. For shoes you could try wedgies in plain colour that look formal with heels but not the heel problem. Most of all how you handle the interview is more important but looks seal the first impression and set the tone. Wishing you luck Vaidehi
Best of luck for your interview If you feel your hair is thin, go for a step cut. It adds voluminous look to your hair. Blow dry your hair on the day of the interview. Gives a good look. You can pair a formal or work casuals shirt with trousers, depending on the position and the company you are being interviewed for. Work casuals is the look to go for unless you are being interviewed for positions in HR or marketing where dressing right is part of the job. Regarding the trouser cut, try out various types in the store and choose the one which suits you best.
JK, Have you tried layer cut? It suits all. Less maintenance too. And adds volume to hair. You can go for dress pants and pair it with a blazer/cardigan sweater. Shoes need not be heels but must be closed at the front like boots. Open toed/peep toes are not suitable for interviews (they are considered glamorous in some part of the world). All the Best!
