Now I really understood the meaning of what it means when we say "It makes one woman to make a happy home".:rotfl So she comes and proudly announces that she had to be away for 4-5 days and you have to agree to pay her for those days besides giving her advance for her travel expenses plus expensive gift. This industry is the most powerful non-unionized labor force I had seen.

They do have unions in Mumbai to fight for them. More than an organized union, their unity is what stands them in good stead. Kick out one maid, she will never allow another one to work in your house. Ask one of your two maids if she knows anyone good to replace the other one, she will straight say "How can I do that? She will feel bad and resent my doing that".

This post of yours reminded me of our move to Trivandrum. When our household material arrived at the doors of the rented house, I asked the truck fellows to go and find someone to unload all the material. The unloading workers demanded that they need Rs.600 (very high for the year 1987) and I told them it was too expensive and I would find someone else to unload. I did not realize at that time that they were part of the CPI (M) union. They smiled shook hands with me and told that I could do as I wish but politely said something in Malayalam. I did not understand what it was. When I asked the house owner, he translated it for me that he was suggesting I could use anyone of my choice but still I should pay them Rs.600.

Very true Viswa. Very unfortunate state of affairs. But it is our fault. If we were independent, could be a bit flexible (turn a blind eye to a bit of dust in the corners and do all our work ourselves it would not be like this. Come to think of it, these women do so much work in so many houses - of course they cut corners - why can't we? If we can accept an imperfect job from them after paying them, why can't we accept the same from ourselves and save money? Our dependence on them is what empowers them to twist us round their little fingers. It is a classic case of the tail wagging the dog.

so madam is out of town...hopefully she should be back when expected.. as they need couple of days to unwind from the journey!!..
my office maid has not come today after a weekend of rest as she has a headache!!!..
you know I went to the homeopath the other day with this irritating cough and he asked if any tension or stress and first thing I blurted is ya maid has ditched because drunken hubby is not allowing her to work as it gets late by the time she leaves my house.. so if she has to come back.. i need to adjust my time!!!.. and guess what he said thats the main reason for my stress!!!HAHAHAHA...
but really I was reading about a automated robotic maid.. only thing is that they don't cook..

Hahahahaha Kelly. Now this is an original one. First time I've heard of someone needing treatment because of harassment by maid. Is there any law in India to save suffering employers from harassment by employees - something along the lines of 498A? If there is please let me know. BTW, she is back today. :-D

Ho...talk about them and you make my blood freeze and thaw at the same time.....when they know they are indispensable they act even more smart!
I used to be their slave when the kids were small, my dh used to tell me, do u even respect you boss so much?
And like you said , they make you so handicapped by our dependancy......our support links !

Good one Satchi and one that I totally agree with.. especially today as " madam " has come after five days. and the reason?. she had been to the dentist on Friday , got a tooth pulled out which is apparently paining and her "see, still it is swollen" had me saying" no, you look as pretty as ever " LOL because she didn't sense my sarcasm....but it is because of her that i got to sit at my pc one hour earlier today so kaamwali...zindabaadh indeed.. I have given up on them, Sats!! and when I say this despondently my family laughs and tells me" you are growing old "

so you too are part of the gang. Good going. Me's got plenty of company. Yes Mindi, we are all growing old, that is why we need them and get so angry and desperate when they play truant. If we were not, we would have been able to do everything ourselves, wouldn't we?

I too agree that now a days we are more dependant on our maids and if they dont come for a day then it happens to be a mess.
