I am sitting facing the invigorating warmth of the morning sun chanting Aditya Hridayam. No, no I have not become more religious than before.
I have just become more health conscious My last medical investigation revealed a woeful deficiency of Vitamin D and my beloved Doctor put me on some Vitamin D supplement. This supplement is prescribed to be taken on a fixed day every week. Not only that, it has to be taken before anything else in the morning before even a steaming cup of coffee. I keep forgetting the prescribed day and even if I remember it, I can hardly resist the aroma of the morning coffee. So I dumped the medicines in the bin and switched over to exposing myself to the morning sun, which is the world's provider of Vitamin D. I feel happy because I don't have to spend any money for this treatment. Dr.Sun is the best, I tell you!

Experts say that sunlight as a source of Vitamin D may be very inadequate beyond 70. But I am sure Surya Bhagwan may be misguided by my youthful looks and supply all the Vitamin D I need:banana:

    Dear Cheeniya Sir,

Enjoy the Sun and it is the natural way to get plenty of Vitamin D. Besides Surya Namaskaram being a Yoga, it also provided rich Vitamin D which is why the ancient tradition followed it. At least, both of us have crossed that age and it is best to be in the Sun and chant Aditya Hrudayam at this age.

Dear @Cheeniya sir, I was also woefully deficient of Vitamin. D (apart from low iron saturation) about a month back and my only symptoms were unusual fatigue and joint pain. I usually have my Vitamin D supplement after my lunch because it is absorbed better with meal containing fats. In a month, thankfully my Vitamin D level went up and my joint pain went away. I realized that I need to keep supplementing both iron and Vitamin D for the rest of my life because it made a night and day difference in how I felt in a week.

Hope you replenish your Vitamin D levels soon too !!

Here in India my doctor says too much of vitamin is not good. Asks to take 60000 units once a week for one month, and then one dose of 60000 units once a month for four months and then stop for six months. Then repeat same cycle.
Of course opinion of doctors also varies

    Yes I agree.

My daily dose was higher till it got replenished and now i have cut back my dose. Even vitamins in megadoses can cause more harm than benefit.

Yes, even my doctor says the same thing. He gave two choices for calcium and vitamin supplements. Take for three weeks, stop for a week or take for two months, stop for a month. I opted for the first one. Long term effects would be there, he says. I am not a doctor but follow his directions.
