Its impossible to forget Shankar and Mohanlal who made their debuts together in a film a few decades back. The film, 'Manjil Virinja Pookal' had launched the career of one of the best actors that Malayalam cinema would ever see.

Years went by, and the villain of Fazil's film wrote a success story of his own. Mohanal went on to become one of biggest stars ever in Malluwood. Shankar on the other hand, literally disappeared from the scene, after a few hits and several other films that sunk without a trace at the box office.

Several years later, Shankar, who had almost vanished from the scene is back. He gets to share the screen with Mohanal in Roshan Andrew's latest film, 'Ividam Swargamanu'.

The sight of these two actors back together after a long while, brings back pleasant memorieS.

365 days and beyond: Films that ran for more than a year and their success stories!!

There are films and then more films made with each passing year. Along comes one movie which rewrites all rules of box office performance. It acts as the benchmark which everyone aspires to emulate but rarely equals. The key players in such a film are placed in a rarified realm in the minds of the audience. The affection showed by the audience is just overwhelming. The fact that the film has crossed the golden milestone of having a continuous run for a year – yes, 365 days !!!!!!!!!!!

ORU THALAI RAAGAM was one such great movie !!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Oru Thalai Raagam – 1980

Oru Thalai Raagam re-defined romance in Tamil cinema. Shankar-Rupa were the lead pair. T Rajendar’s direction and music helped very much. This movie is also a late pick up. It was the songs that helped this movie to pick up. Even if you listen TMS voice in this film’s songs, you will forget yours.

    ABOUT SHANKAR PANIKKAR:

Shankar is considered as one of the superstars of Malayalam cinema in 1980s.

    As a Star/Actor

Actor Shankar had a dream opening with the Vijaya T. Rajendar 's Tamil Mega Hit " Oru Thalai Ragam " which completed 365 days in theatres. Luck favoured him in Malayalam Films too with Fazil 's directorial venture Manjil Virinja Pookkal, where Mohanlal debuted as villain became a Musical Hit. Overnight Shankar became a hot property in both Tamil and Malayalam film Industry and almost all his films doing good business.

He was the Second Super Star of Malayalam Films of 80s after Late Action Star "Jayan".

He never experimented with his roles, still he had a very large fan base in Kerala. Many of his ordinary films were hits just because of his presence.

His teaming with Mohan Lal is very popular with many Hits.

Shankar's pairing with actresses Menaka and Ambika were considered as safe bets.

During late 80's, he cut down his film assignments and shifted to USA for personal and business reasons. However, most of his come back ventures failed to ignite the Box office.

    As a Director
Shankar already completed his first directorial venture in Malayalam VIRUS, a film on AIDS, is awaiting Indian release, even though it had the US release. His first commercial Malayalam directorial venture Keralotsavam 2009 starring Kalabhavan Mani and Vinu Mohan is under progress and is expected to release in November 2009.

After a long gap of more than 20 years, Shankar and Menaka, the most popular film pair of 80s, will once again play the prominent pair in Kalabhavan Mani 's upcoming Annarakkannanum Thannalayathu.

    Snippets
Shankar is instrumental in giving break to directors Priyadarshan and Bhadran. Director Sibi Malayil changed to serious family films with Shankar's home production Chekkeranoru Chilla.

The teaming of Mohanlal and Shankar is one of the most Guaranteed pair of Malayalam Films ever. None of their combination was Flop.

Shankar lives in Cochin with his wife and son.

Thanks for your fb dear sudha....

He looked real paavam hero in screen....was he like that in real too...?

He went abroad during his peak time....which made him lose his wonderful numero uno position in malayalam filmdom....

Now when i see him in the television...i feel he is the same as he was in movies....a real good and timid hearted hero...who did not know to speak aloud his feelings.
