DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH IT COSTS YOU TO TREAT COVID WITH ACCESS TO LORDS FEET AT THE END?
    Sixteen lakhs! [
Eight lakhs sixty thousand for medicines and consumables while another 2.8 lakhs namakaranamed as Covid charges.]

According to TOI report of date a Santa cruz resident lost his 74 year old father to Covid 19 related complications and he was also ready to join his father when he got a bill for Rs16 lakhs. His father was in ICU for 15 days in a city hospital in Mumbai.Such a hefty bill will paralyse any middle class family.Adding insult to injury the man was not even given an inkling of the jumbo bill making him scurry for mobilising the funds.

The Director of the corporate hospital in Mumbai says”The patient was brought to us in a critical condition with multiple co morbidities and multi organ failure.Despite best measures he passed away”.In utter disregard to the spate of complaints and capping of charges by the Government, hospitals find a way to circumvent the regulations.

I will give you a practical example. For intestinal bleeding,a non corporate hospital in Bombay charged me Rs 94000.For the same thing a corporate hospital in Bangalore charged me Rs 1,31000.For the third time a mission hospital in Bombay charged me Rs 63000.The same doctor did the procedure on both the occasions in Bombay. It is the Doctor who matters apart from Hygiene and not the suit boot receptionist who opens the car door for you.

I analysed the bills carefully and found that Doctor charges were more or less the same.Where they make money is in consumables, charges for procedures, icu charges etc.The first question they ask you is the amount of insurance cover.Second-pleading non availability of normal private room they will push you into an expensive room which automatically results in higher charges for everything. They will make it a point to keep you in ICU till monday And keep you for observation till Friday-This improves the occupancy. We say Sabash and shower petals on the hospitals.MRI,CT SCAN and Angiogram are money spinners and it requires extraordinary communication skills on your part to escape the trap.

    @sln
    The conclusion is unmistakable.
One should thank his stars for not sending him or her to heavens via gates of hospitals. Every patient is an acquired asset worth in gold. A target is fixed perhaps by the chief or experts. You see they have to protect defend the professionals in case of bungling. One recalls late actress Sridevi fought legally with the management for wrong operation of her parent. It was right instead of left organ operated in famous New York Hospital.

    2. They keep patient more sick till the patient’s guardian or parents or relative plead or indicate that they have no more resources to foot the bill.

    3. Then hospital quickly finds ways to discharge with a nice certificate summarising that they did all they knew in medicine with their special diagnostic equipment.

    4. Ads appealing in media for donation/funds for treating/curing a child from a disease unpronounceable is another gimmick. While their scalpel glints, hospital management staff and executives watch patients but they don’t see glint in the eyes of the sufferers.

    Thanks and Regards.

    Dear Thyagarajan,

The moment you enter the hospital they will prick you for fixing the canula. That is the beginning of tragedy of errors. My daughters dont allow me to say anything.I carry a medical history explaining the problems relating to every part of the anatomy.I also have an executive summary concerning the part involved in the current problem.Even before everything is discussed they swipe the card and make the payment.Once this is done hospital has a field day wheeling you from room to room forXray,US Abdomen,Echo etc.Once the report is given they say Xray has not captured the problem and order MRI.Billing is a torture particularly if mediclaim is involved. They take your FB before formalities are completed and you are discharged. On one occasion I recalled the FB and blasted them with another FB when they took four hours for completing the formalities. Some brainy chap will include imaginary things like NS.Krishnan,as circus manager includes cost of Halwa for the elephants in the film Chandralekha.
Hospitalisation is inevitable in old age.Now I google for the best doctors, note down the hospitals where they consult and choose the one closest to our home.50% of the problem is solved when every one at home is clear about the hospital and Doctor. Regards.SLN

    Dear Thyagarajan,
I went through the snippet which brought back memories of Tnagar in the sixties and the astrologer who was ruling the roost those days.Measured responses and well thought out decisions defined our actions.

Even if those escorting the patient permits one to explain his case or show previous reports or execu summary, I do think that the doctors in big hospitals listen to one with perfunctory interesting or throw cursory glance on those case papers . I was half way stopped by a junior doctor to tell the rest to his “ boss” who was on the way! The “boss” doctor was always in great hurry though his exterior wears a semblance of patience.

    Dear Thyagarajan,
Good that you went for a second opinion. Please remember that second opinion is to be sought where surgery is involved particularly in the case of 70+.We have an orthopedist in Bangalore who is an excellent surgeon with remarkable success. We go to him only as a lost resort.Buy time for expensive CT SCAN,MRI And the most worrisome pet scan.It is not a question of money but unnecessary interference in the functioning of the body.
