Hi Friends HAPPY DIWALI TO ALL.

Traditions vary from state to state in celebrating Diwali. Those days only home made food were offered to God and before one week the preparation would be started.Athirasam dough is prepared three to four days earlier and is preserved by sprinkling Gingelly oil .They pierce the dough with a spoon and pour gingelly oil over the dough as a preservative. Then on Diwali day morning we make athirasam which is very soft .if the syrup consistency is not proper Athirasam become very hard .

ukkarai is the special sweet which is a must in Tirunelveli district. Then Sugiyan which is famous in south Tamilnadu.

Friends please share your style snacks.

    Dear @periamma ,

Nice to know that you still maintain all the traditions. I am not ritualistic and I have simplified my life to a great extent. I do make a couple of simple stuffs a day before the festival, depending on my interest and energy level.:)

    Hi Periamma

I am a beginner in cooking. That's a nice info regarding the use of gingelly oil as preservative. Can all oils be used the same way and also please suggest a easy sweet dish to make.

@rosylife welcome dear. Here comes the easy receipe for Maida appam.
Take a cup of Maida ,add five tsp of sugar (taste the dough and if you fell less sweetness then add one more tsp.sugar) then add milk and mix thoroughly till the flour and sugar dissolves. If needed add little more milk and the dough must be like idly batter .Heat oil in a pan ,take the dough with a karandi(ladle) and slowly drop it over the heated oil .Medium flame cooking is best for any dish as the dish is cooked evenly.Turn the other side so that both the sides are cooked well.

Medium flame cooking is best for any dish as the dish is cooked evenly. In high flames the outer coat cooks but inside it is not done.Try this appam receipe .All the best.i have shared what i know .

Athirsam name ketale Mouth watering, maa :yum::yum:

what is ukkarai & Sugiyan I haven't heard these names anytime.

As a kid Diwali was one of my favrt festival.
But now like Geeta ma'am said we have also simplified the festival celebration to great greaaaaaaaaaaat extent due to which I don't feel any difference between festival and any other normal day ;)

Mom & Sis are great cook maa, they will prepare many varieties of food. If not on festival day maybe pre or post festival. List would be tooo big maa.

I don't have much interest in cooking :tongueout: but sapida migavum arvamana kuzhandhai

Happy Diwali ungalukku and unga family-kum. :beer-toast1:
