Disclosing SSN to recruiters in US-inputs please!

    Hi Friends,

    I want to know how common is it for recruiters to ask for 5 digits of SSN to apply to a IT/software job. I'm hesitant in giving out the SSN as have heard of fake job ads and identity theft. I have searched on the net and it saying applying for government jobs its required. But this job is for a credit card/payment processing company and I'm applying through an agency.

    To the best of my knowledge, if it is a Temp agency they will require you to fill out a form and will require your SSN #.
    Recruiters don't require initially, but after interview, when they are interested in hiring you, they will require SSN#
