There have been cases where the patient came out of a comma after years. Mythology has its own room. In practice, thousands of patients are living under geriatric care.

    Dear Shri Viswa,
As I said, science has many success stories. At the same time, medical science has made patients captive, thanks to some greedy doctors.
Bryan Johnson is trying a different approach to longevity of life.
The bottom line is death is inevitable and the approach has to be to make it short and peaceful.

Yes, Mam. Agree. It does not seem possible that in the distant future, science will win over death. Till such time and side by side, efforts should be made to make death tolerable. Maybe counselling will help or making euthanasia legal.

This is all confusing to me. I do not know how I will feel if I am pushed to that situation. I know an NRI lady in canada with life support for more than a year opted for euthanasia prompted by her sister. But the husband and children could not come to terms with it, but had to agree because there if the patient agrees no one can go against it. The husband 80+ had to bear the helplessness & guilt as well as the loss of a spouse of many years.

My mom and MIL both were with us till they passed away. Actually they were always telling during their earlier years, that they wanted to die peacefully, without troubling anyone. But both were bedridden for a couple of years till death took over naturally. As caregiver it was tough, for a certain period, caring for both with different needs. It was a revealing experience about how each one perceives the situation. Fortunately both suffered from dementia in different degrees, and were not aware of their suffering. No life support was required though they had health issues. It was for us to care for them like one would care for babies.

It was like this always in our country and science didn't interfere in the matter of death. Now that the West has brought up such an option, we think of science for death while all these years it was only to cure, assist in living. I strongly believe that our perception of death also has changed like that of life.

There is a rising clamour for passive euthanasia ie removing the life support systems. One of the hospitals in Chennai kept a friend of mine on life support system for almost a month. The case is on, in the court now.

With ethics is a forgotten word now there are chances of some abusing it if euthanasia is made legal .

First, I must appreciate the care you took of your Mom and MIL. Their blessings will always be with you.
Yes, the perception of death is changing it changed long back, and only now we are accepting it. Some 50 years back, a friend of mine living in Canada had to visit time and again to see his ailing father. He used to confide in me how difficult it was for him to come from Canada, expenses apart, loss of wages included and how sincerely he prayed to God to take his father away.
Nowadays palliative care is available at a cost but there is no going back from the mental and emotional stress the family goes through.

    Thanks for suggesting this post.
    "A Life in Reverse

George Constanza: "The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? DEATH! What's that, a bonus?!? I think the life cycle is all backwards."

Maybe it does happen, who knows? Ignorance is bliss, as they say. Life is tough only because it ends in death or it is tough because it does not end in death when needed? Two sides of the same coin.
    The question will remain unanswered.

Totally agree with you on euthanasia. The matter is, however, complicated by human nature as one is never sure if someone is forced to sign the form for material gains to the others. Otherwise, it seems the kindest thing to do, just like we decide it is the kindest thing for our animals.
