Dad had taken me to an ENT doctor to examine my left ear in which I was getting intermittent acute pain. The specialist in T Nagar-Chennai area in 1960s charged consultation around Rs50 (considered phenomenal at that time). After subjecting my left ear to some elaborate time consuming procedure with peculiar instruments, he had suggested that a surgery was immediate need of the hour to correct the bone/tissue growth in the inner ear. Deftly checked probably deafness I believe!

Dad thought for a while and desired to know sum required for the surgery and amount needed for expenses post surgery. The specialist told fees would be Rs2000 and other expenses might be around Rs500.

He told the specialist that after checking with home for auspicious day and time, he would decide and get back to him. The specialist said as few surgeries were already lined up for the next fortnight and my case being serious and of emergent nature, dad should decide and report same day in which case consultation fee Rs.50 paid would be adjusted in the final payment.

Dad did not perplex. He told him that he would get back to him the same day.

We came out and walked to Nathan’s hotel nearby. We had idli with plateful sambar (unlimited) and a cup of coffee (shared) and paid the bill around eight annas. (One anna=1/16th part of a Rupee). While devouring sambar, my mind was replaying conversation that dad and doctor had; that got me worried stiff.

I was in my first year engineering. Exams were in the offing. I could not afford to rest or bunk classes. But the ear pain was intermittent and excruciating at times.

From hotel, Dad took me to an astrologer, who was supposed to be renowned and his clientele included even men and women from cine industry and even from Great Britain. In his office, near Mambalam station end at Renganathan Street, he had displayed on the walls, the medals and accolades and other testimonials that he had received from top echelons of the society and U.K.

We were lucky he was free. Dad did mention to him about his boss, a cine film producer, writer, author, editor of tamil weekly magazine and owner of studios and his winning predictions for latter’s betting on horses. With the mention of this, the astrologer turned more receptive.

Dad taken out my horoscope from a soiled LG asafoetida yellow cloth bag and handed it over to astrologer and requested him to predict about my future academic performance, career, marriage and lastly general health. He glanced at it for sometime and quickly did some arithmetic calculations. He said he had to verify the correctness of the horoscope and if ‘this’ horoscope was correct then the boy would be having a pea size mole on the inner aspect of left thigh; and told me to look for this on my left thigh. And lo! He was on the dot indeed. I did have the mole in the spot and in the size he told. Thus his credibility and correctness of my horoscope was established.

After consulting an over used almanac and doing some arithmetic, he said that I would excel in studies without any hindrance or break and would become a government officer. But for some minor hiccups, he would enjoy robust health and family life.

My dad offered him some amount but he politely declined for reasons not known to us. Later dad told that he had heard that the cine producer, gifted him a house in a posh locality at Chennai.

Astrologer’s predictions impelled dad, to seek second opinion about my ear. He straight away took me to another ENT doctor at Pondy Bazzar at Chennai. That doctor, after quickly examining my left ear, told that some fungal attack and I would be cured and freed in a week’s time with the help of some drops. Dad paid him fees Rs.20 and purchased the prescribed drops for about Rs.4. Dad, astrologer and the second ENT specialist were all proved right; with the help of drops, pain in my left ear vanished with in two days. I did not miss the classes or the university exams.

Now AM GOING TO BE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF SEVENTY, I am still able to hear my spouse and listen to Bollywood, Hollywood, Kollywood etc., without any external aid thanks to dad’s unperturbed calm approach and the astrologer.

Brilliant narration. Enjoyed every minute of it. The entire write-up was playing like a movie in my head. When I was a kid in the late-80s-90s, our old, faithful Saravana Bhavan for the first time opened a fast-food branch and the judgment and protests were palpable. So I just cannot imagine the concept of unlimited Sambhar or eating for Annas.

Your father seems to have been an excellent parent, paying close attention, love and care to his child, at the same time, not reacting hastily, but responding calmly to the situation.

Wisdom-filled head on a love-filled heart. Rare combination.

Since I joined IL late, I seem to have missed many such gems. From previous replies, it looks like the "mom is...." is another story. Request @Thyagarajan sir to link the post in the original thread.

I have made a mental note to go to the archives and read your posts one by one, in-between office meetings, for some stress-relief and good old-fashioned writing pleasure !

3. Anend your positive comment about my dad, often I realise the secret of his robust health & longevity could be largely attributed to his not reacting immediately but takes due time to be responsive.

4. I wish I could write more as I did in past. But at times I feel senility has set in. With slightly impaired vision and butter-Like fingers improperly dance on the keyboard, I find I had to spend more time and energy to write with appropriate word selection & formatting etc.

Am glad that read of this anecdote brought back memories of childhood. Girl child is always believed to be a pampered lot of every dad. There could be numerous incidents with happy endings wherein dad played an important role in the lives of every child and such incidents stay always green in our memory.
