Hello Friends We live in the Los Angeles area and my son is studying CS major at college. He is a bright kid and is currently senior at college although officially he is in his second year of college. With so many credits applied he is officially a senior at his college. My question is he has been applying for so many internship opportunities but nothing is working out. I seek your advice on how other kids especially ones from bay area get opportunities? Are there any specific websites that you are aware of that helps find internship opportunities. Other than internships how else can he make himself job ready. Any advice is appreciated. Thankyou in advance.
The CS intern application season for summer 2024 is just about starting. The application season for summer 2023 was very challenging. With the tech layoffs, most companies slowed down or completely stopped intern recruiting. Even students from colleges like CMU, Cornell had internships offers getting withdrawn. Further, though your son officially has junior or senior status, first year students would have been the last choice of companies for many reasons. So, he should not let last year's experience discourage him. - Get the resume revised by a paid professional if not already done so. - Maintain a spreadsheet of companies applied to: Date | Company Name | Remote or in-person | Job title | Link to Job Posting | Status - Apply to at least 25 companies each week starting in mid-September. Parent can help too with the applying part. - LinkedIn is good enough to find internship postings. The average bay area CS student I have talked with during the summer 2023 application season said they applied to around 250 companies, got invited to about 6-8 coding interview rounds, 5 first round interviews, and 1-2 actual offers. So, getting resume updated with a professional service and applying to a high number of companies is key.
Very good post. my kid is just going to college. I am from CS. but studied in india. it was different when i was studying. just wanted to brainstorm on senior parents too. my friends kids in india, are not so worried about internships. instead they are trying to participate in Algorithm competitions like Top coder , Open source contributions. not all kids but some. Some are even pairing together to make some apps to improve their resumes. Is internship a real important activity here in USA colleges. how does kids from other majors handle here like Bio-medical engineering , mechanical . does picking a job from craiglist for very less price helps.
Internship is very important here in college. Even high school juniors/seniors do internships to get good colleges. It helps to land a job after graduation. Usually during junior year most of the kids will be doing internships. Some will do co-op jobs during college(skipping a semester or two). Internships are not easy nowadays. Kids have to work hard to get an internship. From freshman year they can start applying by going to career fairs. I don't think Craigslist jobs will add value to their resume. I may be wrong not sure.
thanks. it helps, brainstorming. it is a whole cultural change for me to understand how different it is for fresher to join work force here.
Thanks Rihanna. Your advice makes sense. I will try to get a professional review of his resume. Without any internships do kids still get into jobs?
Yes, of course kids with no internship experience do get into jobs after graduation. It is just a little more challenging and might take a bit longer.
Somehow i do not buy this. and this is only for Computer science. Reason. I was a house wife in usa for 5 yrs after my first kid. So with 0 experience i had secured a job. It was 2009 recession. I have seen interns hired for internship, i cannot say for big 4 . but for mid size companies, they document most of the time. very rarely they are allowed to touch the code. Main issue will be he, has work little hard and smart to build a portfolio for himself. like a Github to show his work. freshers are expected. a. Good in Algorithms and DS. -- good site to compete and show SRM Overview b. Fair or Ok in System design GitHub - systemdesignfightclub/SDFC Last , what is he interested in a. Web development 1. front end 2. backend b. Mobile 1. ios dev 2. andriod 3. javascript frameworks c. Data Science a. he can check --> Kaggle: Your Machine Learning and Data Science Community d. may be more - i do not know First 2 , he can pick 1 . Make a very simple app/ site in App store or Cloud. He is ahead of many 2 - 3 yrs developers with experience. even devs with lot of experience, do not get chance to work in all parts of developments. coding design deployment and hosting. Most important he should showcase his work in Github . As a worker, i assure you there are 100s of companies. If you are only looking to be hired for big companies. it is tricky . but lot of companies small ones, want people to productive asap. 1. here are some groups where they refer to interviews. SDE Skills Job search Linkedin . he can stalk lot of senior engineers or recruiters and show case his work. to get interview referrals.
lot depends on what he wants to work. my Dh used to tell. in 2001 in india. one of his friends wanted to be gamedeveloper. there were literally 1% jobs. that kid used to build games and in interview he showed this work. i feel it is still the same. since when ever i am changing jobs. recruiters do not even touch my resume if it does not reflect what the market needs. i have to catch up prepare and modify resume just to get interview.
Thankyou Lavani. I really appreciate your inputs. With the recession looming around I am worried he will be jobless when he graduates. I will inform him all the resources that you have shared.
