    Creative Solutions to Complicated Problems

Venkat, a mischievous five-year-old boy, had inserted a tamarind seed deep inside his nostril. He struggled to breathe and was crying in distress. His worried parents rushed him to the hospital. Despite three people holding him tightly, the boy refused to let the doctor use forceps to remove the seed. Concerned about causing any harm, the doctor advised the parents to bring him back the next morning on an empty stomach so that the seed could be removed under general anesthesia.

Instead, they took the boy to my mother, the daughter of a renowned Ayurvedic doctor. She asked someone to bring a pinch of snuff, which she then carefully inserted into the boy's nose. Presto! The seed shot out as the boy sneezed uncontrollably and violently. Everyone was amazed by how a simple solution avoided a costly and risky procedure.

A similar incident involved a three-year-old girl who had swallowed a bead that got stuck in her esophagus. My mother asked for a "poovan" variety of banana, known for its softness and smooth texture. She instructed the child to swallow the banana, followed by gulping water. Hurray! The bead slid down into her stomach and was later passed with her excreta.

Another incident occurred with Abishek, a two-year-old boy who was playing in the garden with a ball. The ball fell into a vessel of boiling water. As he tried to retrieve it, the vessel tipped over, severely burning his body from the waist down. He was admitted to the hospital, and under excellent care, most of his wounds began to heal, except for a small patch on his right thigh. I brought my doctor, a smart young chap, to examine him. The doctor asked for a finger glove, made a small hole at the tip, and inserted it into the boy’s private part. Miraculously, the unhealed portion of his thigh dried up within two days. The doctor later explained that the wound wasn’t healing because it was constantly wet due to urination. The glove prevented urine from coming into contact with the thigh.

To keep Abishek occupied, I bought him a teddy bear. I made a small cut on the teddy bear's thigh, sprinkled some red ink on it, and handed it to the boy along with a tube of Vaseline. I told him to take care of the teddy bear, just as the doctors were taking care of him. You won’t believe it, but the boy became so absorbed in looking after his "patient" that he stopped crying altogether.

These are real-life incidents, and I'd like to share something I read in an article. A man lived in an area notorious for frequent robberies. On his friend’s advice, he got a dog for protection. Unfortunately, the dog didn’t bark. They tried various methods, like not feeding it or keeping it tied up, but nothing worked. Despite the dog’s silence, the family had grown attached to it and didn’t want to give it away. Not willing to give up, the man hung a sign on the gate that read, “Beware of Silent Dogs,” knowing that people are often more frightened by silent dogs, which might pounce without warning.

Remember, there are creative solutions to complex problems if only you take the time to look for them.

This reminds me of a woman who could not lift her arms above her head and went around specialist and hospitals. Six months gone she managed attiring differently without blouse. She returned to her mother from New Jersey. Mother made her share her work. There was power shedding on regular basis. No electric supply.

She had the old ammi kal ( flat stone grinder). She requested her USA returned daughter to try grinding the roasted ingredients for sambar and chutney etc. A week gone by. Mother noticed daughter was at ease lifting her hands straight above head. And then her daughter started clad in saree with sleeved blouse!

There was another incident in hospital of Dr Rangachari. A woman in advanced stage of pregnancy admitted. During rounds Dr R noticed the woman in her navel the unborn baby's finger protruding a little . He was wondering what to do with this puzzling situation! He saw in lobby a young colleague was smoking. A flash of idea crossed his mind. He lighted a cigarette and with its blazing end gently touched the baby's protruding finger. Hey presto! To his delight he found baby withdrawn its finger!

    Dear sir,

    Good writeup about simple solutions.
My sister was visiting from Australia. She hurt her toe and the nail was half coming out. She went to a reputed doctor in Chennai. He told her to come back next day. He said he needs to do the procedure in an operation theatre.
My sister was very scared. On coming home, she told our maid, who was very old about the problem. The maid told my sister to show her leg. As she was examining it, she in one jerk pulled it out. My sister did not even realise what had happened. So much for modern doctors.
This reminds me of another incident. My maid was 8 months pregnant. One morning she did not feel any movement in her tummy. She worried and went to the primary health centre. The doctor told her the baby was dead and demanded Rs. 5000/- to abort the foetus.
My maid was very upset and as she was walking out, a nurse told her to get a scan done before going back to the doctor.
The lab technician on hearing her told her to sit calmly and bought her a glass of juice. On drinking the juice, the baby immediately kicked.
It was just that, my maid has not eaten anything from the previous day.
I still shudder to think how careless the doctor could have been
    Regards
    Uma

In 1967, on my back - I had eruptions all over making it difficult to sleep or recline on my back. I was preparing for my final degree engg exam. Mom took me to a MD and he suggested a shot a day for a week and some pill to swallow three times a day for a week. Mom didn't go to pharmacy to get those shots and pills. We reached home when our domestic maid too arrived.

My problem was discussed with the Meenakshi -the maid. She said she would bring some leaves and apply over affected area and in a day or two eruptions would vanish. She brought tiny green tender leaves and made a paste adding a little turmeric powder using flat stone அம்மி குழவி. She herself dabbed and spread the paste over my back.

Hey presto, the eruptions all fallen off from my back. No itching no blemishes no irritation. Overnight I had the relief. From that day, I began calling our maid endearingly
    "Hello Dr Meena."

There have been interesting solutions to complicated problems. There are interesting

annecdotes in Dr.Ramgachari's book.Dr. Rangachari and my Appa were thick friends. DR.Rangachari used to

take a tumbler of RASAM prepared by my ATHAI ( fathers sister ) as a cure for many stomach disorders.

It was the year 1956. I was in my SSLC class. My periappa ( fathers eldest brother) had some tumour in his feet
As it was underneath the leg he could not walk.Water was whoozing and many small worms were coming out.
My cousin was a specialist doctor.( MD) He examined my uncle and said that the infection has penetrated deep.Take him toCMC vellore and have his leg amputated upto the ankle level. If you dont do it immediately, condition will worsen and his entire leg upto thigh has to be removed.
My uncle began to weep. He was not prepared for amputation.Next morning my Amma, the most intelligent lady of the house
prepareg hot water in a large wide basin, placed a few drops of DETTOL.
Uncle was made to sit on a cot.His leg was placed inside the basin of hot water.ZSOOOOOOOOOO
A sipping sound was heard. Hundreds of maggots were flushed dead from out of his foot. The basin was full of worms. Amma threw away the water and brought another basin of water. The pocess got repeated until no worm was seen. She bandaged the leg with rice flour paste.Gave a nice filter coffee.Allowed to him to take rest in the pyol( THINNAI)
After three days uncle felt lot of relief Whenthe bandage was removed,we saw wounds getting closed and we saw formation of new muscles. He started walking with the help of stick. On te tenth day he was on his own and he went to river Kaveri to take bath.My doctor cousin who visited after two weeks was surprised at AMMAS intelligence.Yet he could not hide his ego. He said " Sithi, you have taken a great risk with this old man".He could not help admiring my Amma.He lived for another 20 years.
Another incident with Dr,RATHNA sabapathi .A rich chettiyar woman from Karaikudi was suffering from severe head ache. Could not be cured notwithstanding high medications. She came to Madras to see Dr.Rathna sabapathi. She took half an hour to explain. Doctor had a calm listening. After a pause he asked the lady" Amma, where did you buy this MOOKKUTHTHI ( nose ring ) of yours. It is so beautifiul. The lady swelled with pride and started explaining the nature and brilliance of the DIAMOND NOSE RING.

The doctor said,Amma, the same nose ring which gives so much of pride and prestige to you is the root cause of your problem.Your central nervous system is unable to tolerate and cop up with the BRILLIANCE or POORIPPU of the diamond leading to this head ache. Pl remove the nose ring and observe for three days and come and meet me.The lady was not in a mood to remove the nose ring yet wanted to be cured of head ache.Unwillingly she removed the jewel.Within three days the head ache vanished.

This explains why old women had no arthritic problems.Sitting and cooking made life easier for them.I t is not possible to adopt these practices with the modern woman sharing so many responsibilities now.
