Hi nuss, I am really impressed by your kids activities at home. Reminds me what parents can do at home to help with the child's success. And thanks for sharing this, inspires me to do more for my 6 year old :)

We had a made very good plan for the next 4 weeks for each member of our research lab to come in just once or twice a week in turns, to maintain our animals and some ongoing studies.
All that went out the window today when I met with our supervisor. Our institute is planning to shut down research operations for the next few weeks at least. Only the clinical staff will be allowed into the facility. One of my clinical colleagues is going to check on our animals. Everything else is going to get tossed.
My daycare is still open but I am planning to keep my baby home as long as I don’t have to go in. So it’s going to be busy but fun.

I had to step out for milk and dish soap today. Took my son along in case parking lot or store lines were crazy, two'd help.

Saw some Eggo waffles in the freezer aisle and almost burst into tears. I thought they'd be out and hadn't even put them in the list. Bought some, came home and had them for after lunch.

Friends with younger kids or teens not yet settled into a routine are having a tough time with WFH. I can't believe how inconsiderate some mangers/supervisors can be. 6:30 or 7pm calls even when the entire team is local!

Some other random stuff: I avoid bigger whatsapp groups, but even 1-1 conversations were becoming like 'what's for lunch?' "it's so cold outside" ... I slowly reduced the frequency.

Today was a tough day. Have to strictly follow a routine from tomorrow. This video did cheer me up. It is a parent irate at the expectations of teachers who are going overboard with distance learning. I hope it is ok to share it in this thread. It made me smile at the end of a long day. So, it is valid for this thread. : ) I avoid forwarded videos but found this funny, so it is how I am coping and how I have changed. : )

I know some people who travelled to south india, because they have relatives in Hyd, Blr, and Madras. They went to the music season in Madras, shopping in Hyd, and eating in Bangalore. I had posted about this a bit earlier on this thread.

And now those who didn't go back soon enough, are sort of stuck. They had decided to stay where they get their metaphorical Eggo Waffles, rather than go back to where they had left their children and grand children -- in Dubuque, Peoria, Wahpeton, or Cheyenne. And now they are worried about their children/g.children -- or so they say on whatsapp. And their children are worried about not getting their usual Eggo, and glad that the parents are stuck in the land of plenty -- plenty of idly, dosa, bajji , vegetarian Thali's, and irani chai.

yes... the world is upside down. India is the land of plenty now .... at least in the minds of shoppers in Desi Grocery stores of America !

same here! Within 2 days, we went from research labs will stay open to all operations need to shut down. We maintain transgenic lines and can’t afford to lose those so provost granted special permission to research labs with mandatory one person per bay and no more than 4 people in a lab. We aren’t required to be on campus and can teach from home but it’s just not possible at least not right now when we are transitioning.

Our daycare is also open and we are constantly getting asked to send our daughter but we decided to keep her home.

    Stay safe!

Hi @deepthyanoop- Here are some ideas that we have used. My son is 7 (in first grade) and my daughter will soon be 5 (pre-school) age. We have access to several free libraries (teacher friends and mother-in-law is a retired teacher) but we limit web-based learning. For us, 15-30 minutes on Khan academy/Razkids or whatever usually leads to our daughter crying for more screen time so we avoid it.

We have been doing a lot of other fun stuff- I let the kids make the schedule and let them pick a new place to learn about (they take turns).
We have been doing a lot of other activities- science experiments that usually my son's ideas and we help them refine the idea.
Using cereal for math for my daughter. our son is in the accelerated math program so he likes to get higher-level problems and we are working with him on that.
My son is into Space and I found this 'Storytime with an Astronaut' that he absolutely loves.
Both kids love playing with stuffed animals (testing them for coronavirus right now :)) and jewelry making, painting etc.
I have made peace that our house is not going to be organized but as long as it is clean, it's okay. I put white sheets on our dining table and their art table- these are their doodle stations. My daughter loved drawing/painting so she just goes and draws whenever my son is busy doing other activities (reading on his own usually).
I also found nice tutorials from Mo Willems and others. My daughter absolutely loves the Piggie and Gerald books by Mo Willems so it's fun for her to draw with him.

We let them decide about meals and they are helping with meal prep.

All the playdoh, puzzles, puzzle books, activities books are also coming handy.
