Constipation due to intake of iron tablets

    Hello readers

    I take a regular dose of Iron & calcium supplements everyday to help reduce hairfall, but even before I can experience any benefit, I feel like stopping this as it leads me to constipation. Iron intake is usually known to cause constipation, so if there is anyone in similar situation and have successfully overcome it with some home remedy, please respond!
    I do drink lots of water & consume food with fiber, but it helps only a bit, as I have to strain hard to clear my system everyday :bang
    My doctor has been of little help :thumbsdown

    So any input will be appreciated, thanks!

    Hi shweta, try having a banana immediately after brushing along with few dried prunes and a glass of orange juice. It helps. I used to suffer with constipation too but its been about 2-3 months after I have started having banana and I have zero issues now. Don't go with the crazy facts that its calorie dense, banana is a very nutritious fruit and has a lot of important things that we need. Just make sure you follow a healthy lifestyle too. If you have a sedentary lifestyle too you could face constipation issues.

    Also, try to drink a glass of milk both on the morning and night as it helps reduce the heat and milk is good for your hair and skin too. If you could take a Vitamin C rich food like oranges, kiwis, red peppers)capsicum) along with iron it would greatly help as Iron is not easily absorbed your system( reason why our stools are green due to excessive iron that the body cant use) and Vit C helps healthy absorption of iron. Not many people are familiar with this fact.

    Thanks JazzyJazz for the reply, I love bananas :) I ensure I eat at least 2 everyday so that I have bowel movement! And yes, I recently found out that Vitamin C ensures better iron absorption and so I eat oranges / mosambi as soon as I take my iron tablets.

    Now prunes is new to me, will have to find out where I can buy it from in Bangalore, don't remember having seen it in stores here....will google it :) thanks again !!

    Also have two glasses of warm water in the empty stomach. It helped my son

    never have iron supplements along with your meals, my doc advised me to have it either half an our before meal or 1 hour after.

    as it distracts the digestion process if taken imediately..

    Prunes will really help with constipation.You can buy that from auchan,total,in your area top in town shops,i have seen in few medical shops too.And yes drink more water.
    I gulped lots of prune juices from 2nd trimester.Even now I used to eat them then and there.

    You may try Duphalac syrup. Its a very good medicine. But check with your doctor before using it.

    alpagoda or aloobhukara is known as indian prunes. Have hot water at bed time and in the morning after brushing. Include raisins & raw vegetables or partially cooked vegetables in your diet. have one banana a day especially at bed time. Sweetlime is also good. If you don't pass motion, then you can add a tsp of castor oil to warm water and drink at bed time. The smell will be hard to tolerate but it is a good remedy for constipation as it will flush only the waste and retains good bacterias. Close your mouth and drink that and immediately pop a fruit candy. This will make it easy.

    Hi Shweta, you can try having pears fruits too, this also is very good. Prunes - you should get them in the dry fruits sections. I don't remember seeing a nuts and spices shop in Bangalore , if not it should definitely be available in the super markets, etc.
