Claiming visiting parents as dependents

    Hi all

    Did any ever filed a returns by claiming visiting parents as their dependents ? We are in GC and they stayed with us for 183 days last year. If we can claim them as dependents, how to apply for their ITIN ?

    Quick response is appreciated.

    Hi subha,
    Even my parents were here last year so I asked by Accountant regarding tax filing as dependents,he said parents should be living with us now to apply for ITIN ,as my parents already left to India i won't be Abel to apply for ITIN

    Hi Jamuna,

    Yes. Luckily my parents stayed with us for 182 days last year and now again they are with us...Lets see if we can apply ITIN and file returns

    I think you can claim if they are Us citizen,or resident of US/Canada.Correct me if I am wrong.

    Yes you can. You need to file copies of their passports and visa pages to prove they were in US during that period. They do not have to be GC holders or US citizens, neither do you have to be one to claim them as dependents on your tax return.
