Chief Thief *LITTLE MAN FACTS OF WELL KNOWN PEOPLE 1* : This is a story told from the early ‘70s when Sam Manekshaw was the COAS. As he was about to sign a letter to the Raksha Mantri, he noticed a typo in the signature block. Instead of the ‘C’ in his designation, a ‘T’ had got typed, making it now read: “Thief of the Army Staff”. He didn’t sign the letter, promptly put a circle in red ink around the word ‘Thief’, marked the letter back to the Adj Gen by whom it had been put up to the COAS for signature, with a remark, also in red ink: “May be true, but keep it within the Army, Goddamn it!!”
Typo and printer’ devil had given raise to such humours in large numbers. An advertised tender of a construction company in a leading paper appeared and the boss of the company was astounded with numerous phone calls.the reason was the ad was printed inter alia a proviso “ entire quantity of widows to be supplied exactly conforming to specification without any deviations”. Yes you had guessed it right. The letter “n” between letters w & i was missing.
