:hello: CHASTITY VERSUS MILK & BABIES :hello:

    DATHATHREYA
This blog inspired By my unplanned visit to Srisai Baba shrine where I happen too see a set of panels depicting episodes from Sri Sai Baba’s life.

There was a huge panel with multiple colour painting depicting scene of three kids squatting aside in front of green banana leaf and half clad lady standing respectfully before them while smiling celestials watching from heaven. Researched about this scene and the result is posted below::hello:

This POORNIMA FULL MOON day (22/23 Dec 2018) celebrated as reincarnation day of triumvirates Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva in a single avatar known as DATHATHREYA

The three Lords combined in one body born on this planet as a preceptor with a view to indoctrinate the people in kaliyug as to how they should lead their life in peace. Though Worshipping several
and different God at different time in different form is a way of life among devouts Hindus, yet all forms are believed to be one and only reflection and representation of parabrahamam.

Though names of the lord of creation, sustainer and destroyer spelt out separately, yet they all constitute in parabrahmam. Daththathreya’s teachings symbolises this fact with his three faces, six hands and two legs. Like mythological Margandeya , He too been accorded celebrated status as everliving evergreen everlasting preceptor.

Origin of Maharishi DATHATHAREYA & Power of impeccable Chastity (there are other versions)

In a remote forest, monk Maharishi Atthri with his spouse Anusuya were living practising austerity.
To serve her beloved husband was the sole aim of Anusuya. She being childless, constantly prayed to the lord that she should beget only lords of trinity as her children.

Moved by her steadfast vow and penance, Trinity lords sought advice of their respective spouse.
The lords’ spouse unanimously decided that Anusuya be subjected to a litmus test and in that if she succeeds then the lords can become her babies. But in the heart of heart they hoped that Anusuya would fail the test.
The lords - Brahma, Vishnu & Siva - the trinity, arrived incognito as monks at the hovel - hermit’s cottage in the midst of forest. Upon seeing Anusuya at doorstep, they requested her to provide them food.

She invited them indoors and arranged for food and when she was about to serve them the food, monks told her that they would accept and eat if and only if she serve the food in her birthday suit.

Anusuya was least perturbed or perplexed at this queer demand of the monks. She had solid belief in herself about her chastity and her singular loyalty to her husband.

( She had one glance at the shiny copper container in the corner containing puja-water which she used daily to worship the feet of her spouse during dawn and prayed for his well being)

She stridently reached the container, transferred little of the sacred water from that copper container into her palm and with closed eyes prayed to the lord that, “ if my chastity and loyalty to my husband is entirely true, let this three monks turn into babies”. Concluding her averment thus, she sprinkled the sacred water from her palm onto the shining pate of the monks.

This act of her instantly caused the metamorphosis of Lords in disguise into babies. It was followed by her wish to the Lord “let now my breasts secrete copious milk”. (lord granted her wish)
Now as desired by the monks, she turned naked and then breast-fed the kids.

Anusuya’s husband Athri who was outdoor, could visualise all these events in his mind’s eye. As soon as he entered the hermitage, he gathered all the three kids with open arms and hugged. The kids merged into one body but with three heads, six hands and two feet. He named the just united and transformed into a single baby as Dhathathreya.

Spouses of these three lords instantly came to know that her husband's have turned not only into babies but latching and suckling at breast of Anusya. Bewildered, rushed at once from their celestial abode to Anusuya’s hermitage and were astounded to see a single baby with multiple heads, hands and feet.

They tears eyed, narrated the deliberation they had with their husbands when Anusuya was observing penance and beseeched the latter to return their husbands forthwith in their original form.
Athri Maharishi responded to them calmly and politely that "we being childless, need to have this baby as much as you like return of your husbands in their original form."

Listening to this, the three lords regained their original form and stood erect, announcing that just created kid would remain in the hermitage with Athreyas to raise into a great saint. Responding thus, three lords vanished with their consort.

Daththreya being son of Athri is also known as Athreya. That is why he is also called Dhaththreyar. The sacred place where Gods enacted this drama is known as SUSEENDHRAM - a tiny town in South India and the Thanu Hills in this area considered to be another living form of - saint Dhathathreya.

In UP he is known as Guru Murthy. In Prayag there is a huge temple for this lord. In Karnataka state every year for three continuous days celebrated as Dhatha jayanthi.

It is said mere thought of Maharishi Sri

    Dhathathreya would eliminate one’s

    tribulations and steadfast

meditation upon his name would result in

    involvement in spiritual attainments.

    @Thyagarajan Sir,

Sri Dattatreya worship is popular in Maharashtra. I think today was Datta jayanti.

Nice informative article. I came to know about Sri Dattatreya some 6-7 years ago when my quest for spiritual texts started. My guruvar prayers now include Sri Dattatreya as well.

    Dear Sri Thyagarajan:

I was very moved by reading this thread. Having lived in Maharastra for more than 6 years, I am familiar with their Dathathreya worship and celebrations. When my son was 6 months old, we went on a trip to Shirdi from Pune and one saint in Shirdi blessed my son and told that wherever he lives Shirdi Baba and Dathateraya will be present. I wasn't surprised by Shirdi Baba and Dathateraya temples nearby when we lived in Pune and Mumbai.

We migrated to the US in 1995 and we never thought my son will be closer to Shridi Baba or Dathateraya. Within a few years after we migrated, a family in New Jersey decided to build a Shirdi Temple 65 miles away from where we live in Florida, because Shirdi Baba came in the dream and told them to do so. Later, this Temple moved to a beautiful space with land owned by this family. When the Temple developed, they installed a beautiful Dathathreya Idol in the Temple and performed Kalasa Pooja.

We attended this celebration and I requested my mother-in-law to stay in the car looking after Orion, our puppy. When I came back to look how they were doing, suddenly, Orion jumped out of the car and ran all over. I couldn't catch up with him. He took a violent turn and walked inside the Dathathreya Sannadhi, went around and started intensely looking at the Idol. I was very embarrassed. An old man who walked inside the Shrine, picked Orion up and called him lovingly as "Veda". When I profusely apologized to him for what Orion did, he told me that Dathathreya is always accompanied by four dogs and a cow indicating four Vedas and the planet earth.

This tearful but exciting experience was brought to my memories again by your thread.

Reference to Dattathreya as an Avadhuta is found in 11th canto of Shrimat Bhagavatham referred to as uddhava Gita.

:hello:Moved & eyes welled up with your narration of that exp with origin Pune and glad with other inputs which I wish I had included in the OP.
    2. THERE Was no clear cut evidence according to Google pages about the reincarnation of D to Shirdi Sai Baba except heresay. :boxing:
    3. Now I know the reason as to why a glistening white Cow stood behind the saint D OF THE IDOL Installed in the shrine I had visited.
    4. When the pooja on the day of D jayanthi was in progress, I saw at the entrance to the shrine a white cow looking deeply into the pooja hall and she was surrounded by four dogs YES four dogs .
    5. I am astounded now after reading the concluding portion of your response to my FB.
    6. The narration in the concluding part was something like finishing part of Hollywood movie. I enjoyed reading it with reverence.
Thanks for sharing such rare moments with IL'ites.
    REGARDS.
    God Bless.

    Thanks to madam sisters .
I am first grateful for the information as quoted above.
    2. I stayed for over two decades in Bombay and even camped in Currency Note Press in Nashik. The GM SUGGESTED that I can visit shiridi and come back in time for the meeting. I told him meeting first and then only I can think of visiting other places. Fortunately, the meeting prephoned due to early arrival of other members and as soon as meeting over GM rushed me with my family members including my MIL.
    2. Our van reached in about an hour and had reached the Samadhi cum shrine in about an hour. THERE were only few pilgrims and we were given special attention and escorted to the Samadhi where we saw a tall gleaming embellished statue of Sai Baba in His grand posture sitting only to ashirvad (bless) us. It was EYE-FULL.
    3. BUT none their ever said to us about D and His incarnation as Shirdi Sai Baba. Only now I heard of D and followed by googling for more info.
    REGARDS.
    Happy New Year.h
    God Bless .

Shri Dattatreya is a popular deity in Maharashtra and his temples are everywhere. His iconography is quite unique and unlike any other Hindu god I know of. I have always been intrigued by his appearance but never got around to reading about him. Thank you for this very interesting origin story. The snippet and the responses have answered a lot of questions.
