Hi, My kid of 6 year old is learning carnatic music online. Right now, she is in geetham level. I am also kind of learning along with her. I feel like we are lagging the clarity of basics. To start with, how to make sure we sing the right note. I think it is called swarasthanas? Please suggest some best practices to get swarasthanas better? Practicising sarali varisai and janta varisai in 3 speeds help? We have been taught only in one speed. TIA.
Hi OP, I am a trained classical singer/performer here in USA and I teach lot of kids for stage performances, hope I can help you with this question. First step for you/your kid is observing sruthi, keep sruthi in tanpura app/ Sruthi box and start practicing sa pa sa. You can try this in sruthi you are comfortable, if your sa, pa , sa is matching with sruthi then automatically you will get knowledge of swara sthanas. If you feel that is tough, then first listen to sruthi sound for few days then automatically you will start understanding the flow. Carnatic music is about listening a lot before even you practice. Once you gain command over Sruthi, then you can start practicing Sarali swaram's. Usually when kids start learning teacher might do only one speed because of difficulty of understanding of laya for them, after a while they get comfortable then teacher will introduce speed. Since you both are learning here, please practice Sruthi , then you can start practicing sarali swara's. Once you master this automatically . you will hit right notes. You need to do Akara Saadhana( singing sa pa sa or Sarali swara's in the form of "Aaaa") if are finding difficulty to say sa pa sa in sruthi, please try to practice "Om Karam" in Sruthi for few days, you will get there. Every day I start my day with Om karam matching in Sruthi , then Varnam for my voice warmup. Once you proceed to advance stages, you will know how to warm up your voice. Very important technique I learnt from one of the legendary singers personally is Practicing Sarali swaramas mixing in Akaram. Ex: S r g m p d n Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa s r g m p d aaaa aaaaa S r g m p aaa aaaa aaaaaa goes on .......... Same with Avarohanam These exercises will help in voice warm up at the same time hitting right notes. Hope I gave you some basic info. Please dont hesitate to reach out to me for any questions
Thank you so much this helps us to revisit the basics. As you told, I used a shruthi in tanpura app and used F# I will listen first and practice the sa pa sa with shruthi and then sarali varisai. I would like to know more on Shruthi, Pitch and Swara. The meanings and differences, I am reading articles on it however I understand it comes with practice and continuous listening to have better understanding.
