    20+20+((20*20)/100) = 40+(400/100)=44%ncrease over original number

    If instead of increase number had been decreased two times by 20% answer would have been
    20+20-(20*20/100)=40-4=36%decrease over original number

    Yup, its 44%

    Here's how:

    If you take x as the number, and increase it by 20%, you get (x+20/100x) = 1.2x
    Increase this number by 20% again, and you get (1.2x + 20% of 1.2x) = 1.2x + 0.24x = 1.44x
    So the increase from x is 1.44x - x = 0.44, i.e 44%
