I read that our calcium requirement is high for breast feeding moms. It also might lead to hair loss. I was thinking if we can take calcium supplements, please advise

Are you not taking prenatal vitamins???
Please start taking it while nursing the baby. YOu need the same amount of calcium, iron etc.
Check with your gyn and start taking vitamins.

Sure Pavi you can. In fact i would say continue prenatal vitamin/iron/calcium throughout breastfeeding also. But sorry to tell you that your hair will fall even if you take all this. That is due to the loss of pregnancy hormones and there's nothing to be done abt that!

    Hi Pavithra,

I was given calcium supplement even after delivery in India. Here I'm not prescribed any calcium supplement even during pregnancy. But I just went to the pharmacy and asked for the recommended dosage for pregnant women (1500mg per day she said). I'm taking one (500mg) everyday. Actually I started having itchy skin and so decided to try calcium (i was told by my other gynaec in Germany that calcuim deficiency can also be one reason for itchy skin without rashes)... it did help me. I suppose the same dosage should not harm you. You can check at the pharmacy. Latha

    Hi Pavithra,
You should take the vitamin/iron/calcium/folic acid everyday for atleast 3-4 months post delivery.
Consult your doctor if you need the correct prescriptions.

    Thanks for all the replies.
I shall start the calcium supplements though I dislike iron tablets :(

Thanks vanathi for that info else I would have posed myself q thousand questions why does my hair fall even after taking tablets :)

One more question to this effect: Does the itching of breasts after feeding also related to calcium deficiency?

    Hi Pavi,

I'm not sure if the itching is due to calcium deficiency. I applied special cream to moisturise breasts after every feed. It is without any perfume and perfectly safe for the baby as well. I don't remember the brand now but I got it from the pharmacy here. And since I read that your doctor mentioned about tender breast tissues in your case may be you need to use a moisturising cream. I think Latha is right. The itching is just dry skin and should go away if you use a moisturizer. I used vaseline body lotion - except for the areola and nipple area.
