The periodic incidents of crime against women are brought to light (thanks to the hounding media!) and then goes into oblivion as our content thirsty journalism fends another 'BREAKING NEWS' to rise its TRP. But where do we Delhi women stand ?...We are left as unsafe and as unsecured as we were from decades (if we may say)

Being the capital city of India and the city with the maximum security systems, why can't women in Delhi go out on the streets with pride and dignity. Why do we always have to be scared of the 'unseen' danger stalking us?

Can we offer a better life to our daughters where they can have the freedom and empowerment to live a graceful life instead of always leading life timidly and with everyone cautioning...YOU'RE A GIRL..YOU SHOULD NOT DO THIS...AND SHOULD NOT GO THERE...

What are your views??

Thanks to Sonia for speaking so strongly on this very important issue. You are absolutely right, Delhi being the capital of India; and the President of India, the Chief Minister of Delhi and the president of the largest & the oldest party residing there - all being WOMAN, it is a tragedy that women in the city feel so unsafe.

However, the root of the problem is not entirely on the 'system' which we always put our blame on; it is the 'culture of the city' which is to a large extent responsible for the same.

I've been to the city several times and found men in and around Delhi to be extremely rude to women, chauvinists, unruly, crude and vulgar. Being educated or well dressed has very little to do with this. Men in Delhi (again I am reiterating some class/sect) live in primitive ages as far as their treatment of women is concerned. Abusive language towards women, road rage and other such aggressive behaviors are largely displayed in public against women.

But how do you change this mindset of a few 'sick' men. Delhi men wake up and its you who can cleanse the system ....

Delhi is a big city. It doesnt make any difference for the average WOMAN ON THE STREET if the both the Chief Minister and the President of the Republic are women. They have their security and the woman on the street has to fend for herself. Period.
I agree with Utsav that one needs to be alert in a Metro city ( as in all Metros all over the world). It is important to have basic knowledge of martial arts. You can easily learn Judo/karate at many places. Besides, even the Delhi Police does impart Martial Arts training to women. Many of my friends also keep a Pepper Spray handy in their bag. An alert woman is a safe woman.

Have you ever wondered what propels men to tease women? Many Indian movies depict scenes of eve teasing which show this conduct as a way to win a woman’s heart. Others portray this as a behavior of men indulging in fun at a woman’s expense.

Psychologists say that fun, love or sex are not the only motives for which men indulge in eve teasing. They feel eve teasing is closely related to the patriarchal mindset of the North Indian male. They are raised to strongly believe that they are physically and emotionally more powerful than women. Having fun at the expense of a woman’s dignity does not seem wrong to them in any way.

I feel this is quite correct. Women, on the other hand, are often raised to feel vulnerable and insecure. They accept themselves as the weaker sex.
Thus, it would be incorrect to put the entire blame on the Indian male. Dichotomies exist among Indian women. On one hand, we voice on equality of gender and at the same time we approve of advertisements, songs and movies that depict a woman only as a sexual object.
We demand reservation in parliament and we want men to vacate the seats in buses. Is it fair to demand equality and at the same time slogan for reservations based on sex?

Elders often advise today’s women about tactics that can be used to stay away from eve teasing. Traveling with a male escort, ignoring, and dressing as not to attract attention are some of them. But truly speaking, all of these are quite insulting and demeaning for a woman.

Though the Indian government has already passed many laws against eve teasing and sexual harassment, such behavior is seldom reported to the concerned authorities. In many cases, where it is reported, the law enforcement agencies take little or no action.

The following remark will tell a lot about the attitude. This remark was made by a policeman in Delhi, “It (molestation) was bound to happen …. The kind of scanty clothes girls wear these days; they deserve it”.

Friends, it is indeed a pity and a matter of grave concern that a city governed by a woman is nothing less than a graveyard for the women. Delhi has been termed by NCRB as the unsafest place for women as it records the highest rate of crime against women.

Over the last few years, Delhi, the national capital, has reached a state of great concern in the issue of the safety of women in the city.

Isnt it alarming to know that in the first quarter of 2008, over 330 molestation and rape cases had been reported? The national capital will find it difficult to shrug off the image of being the “rape capital”.

NCRB, that Anandi refers to, stands for National Crime Records Bureau. But, one does not require to look at the statistics collected by NCRB in order to know that women in Delhi are subject to high level of trauma resulting from harassment, attack, rape, assault and murder. The streets of Delhi, irrespective of the mode of travel and conveyance, have always been places of sexual danger. A prowler seems to be waiting for his prey at any corner.

Daily newspaper reportings regularly inform us about the inhuman behavior that often takes place againt women, in Delhi. A number of such incidents don’t even come to the fore.
