    Burning Money - Part 2

My brother had a German Friend and his wife, in their mid forties, come to Jaipur on a Holiday. They stayed at a palace here close to my place, room being 4000/- inclusive of Taxes and Breakfast. This is a special room, the room being around 600 sq feet, and the bathroom not less than our bedroom, very well done, antique style, but everything in shape and order.I had got this hotel for them,as it was full but i know the manager well, and he cancelled someone to accomodate our guests.

They were here for a week, and we took them around town. This being their first visit to jaipur, they were thrilled. They loved the Amber Fort,Galta, where they found Hundreds of monkeys,Chokhi Dani, where they had a camel ride for 5/- per head, and they could not beleive the rates being so cheap.

They loved Niros Restaurant, the oldest and the best in town, and we went there many a times.A few times we treated them, and some they treated us.The other day they paid and we were like 8 of us, and the bill came to 4000 + 200 tip and when u divide this by 60 to convert to Euro currency, it was ridiculously cheap for them.

They were telling us that a bottle of water in Germany of 300 ml cost 3 Euros, thats 180/- per glass.Beer is the same too.And here they get a litre of mineral water for 10/-.They were shaking their heads at the prices. And the food that we ate at Niros, would have costed in Germany something like 4 times, and not half as tasty. When i have been to Germany,I stay in a seedy cheap Hotel, drink the water from the bathroom Tap,and carry it around town. And i buy bread and Ham slices, andmake myself a nice good sandwitch, and love the Mcdonald and pizza hut stuff, which is very reasonable compared to the local restaurants where u order food. And buy a bottle od scotch, mix it with the bathrrom tap water, and have my spirits soaring. And never have i fallen ill ever.

Yesterday evening my brother took them to Rambagh palace Hotel, the palace converted to a 5 star under the Taj Group.for a cup of Tea and to show them the Hotel. They moved around, and asked to see the rates of the Rooms. And when i heard the rates today, I literally fainted.

To me a 5 star is like 10,000 to 15000 max in a village like Jaipur, and so i thought.I have booked Hotels for many cousins and guests in Jaipur, and the ranges is as above. But what Rambagh charges was like this.

    Single Occupancy - 35000
    Double 36000
    Suite 1,75,000
    Super Suite 3,50,000 per night.

I have never heard such ridculous rates in my entire life, either in Jaipur , or in India, I dont know about Foreign Hotels. What can u do in such expensive rooms. How many Hours are u going to spend in that expensive room and what are u going to do.Max u can spend 2 waking hours in the morning, and two in the evening, and the rest sightseeing during the day or business,, and sleeping at night.

And all rooms were occupied, and for many months they are booked in advance.Where do people get themoney from.Yes maybe Pepsi can spend this for Indra Nyogi when comes for a business visit, but otherwise who spends this? Im sure notmany would spend their own personal money for this kind of luxury.Wow.

At lunch today, me wife, brother ,bhabhi, and my two daughters were discussing this and i put them this question.

Suppose, I made u all a proposition. At my expense, or rather at a stranger's expense, either stay for a night , everything paid up in the 3.50 lakh Room, or take a lakh Cash, what would u prefer ?The answers were very interesting. But i will put this question to all of u here on this forum, let me know which of the two will u prefer. Then i will tell u what my family told me.!

Even after all this, most hotels are charging Airport pick ups of Guests at a distance of say 15 kms from the Airport, at 2000 to 5000 can u beleive that ! I thought this came free with the room charges, and my head is just spinning. Why not bloody take a cab for a few hundred and reach the hotel yrself.Must be the corporate guys, whose companies pick up the tab.

Wish i was working for a Big company to avail of these luxuries, instead of working for myself and daydreaming when i can just lay my bottoms on the bed in the 5 star 3.5 lakh room.I shall start praying to the Lord to make me a corporate employee and not a boss,so i can sleep on the best bed, eat the best food of the 5 stars, and have a 200 buck cupof tea,and a 1000 buck haircut, all paid by someone else. And ive also heard the companies provide you with pretty escorts for a price, i mean to escort you around town shopping, where most probably they have a cut with the shop keepers.

Ah ! to be an employee and have the best bed for yr backside. That will be the day.Amen.

    Sir,

Very nice post. I laughed my stomach out with the below lines. I remembered my own days, When I first time came to US, Stayed in very horrible hotel and did the water thing.
    Well to answer your propositions,

if money is strictly of stranger or some award money.. I will opt to utilise and stay in hotel.. I will take it as Life time experience. However I doubt wether it will be worth. Even then I will plunge into it.

If money is my own hard -earned , then I will not spend on such a criminal luxury..

Very nice post. Thanks for posting,

    Ria

Dear Kamalji, a warm evening to you!

A very nice post. Many a time the "conversion factor" play a vital role when we switch over countries, let it be an official visit or for luxury and leisure reasons.

Day by day the economy rates get triggered exponentially. The market trends are changing as per the demands that are going up the ladder.

My response to the situation you had posted would be: I always value money and am a girl who do not unnecessarily spend the same like water. Either a one rupee coin or a thousand rupee note; it should be given its due respect and importance. Whether its my money or someone else's, I would try to preserve and treasure the same for a potential future use. I always plan my needs at the earliest and include a budget plan too. When our needs can be satisfied and met with quality at a cheaper rate, why to cling on to "luxury" tag???

    Regards
    RamyaVaradharajan

    Dear Kamal Sir

A nice question posted n your thread has very good message in it..
I wont stay in a luxury hotel for 3.5 lakhs n i wont regret for it later daily. Rather i would accept that (ah..God..The thought of getting a lakh cash for nothing in demand itself is nice..thanks to you sir for taking me to such an imaginary world!) one lakh cash n would surely multiply it enormously within a few months time (ofcourse only thru good ways). Wanna see how??
Then get ready for giving that one lakh to me sir. Will book a ticket to Jaipur today itself after seeing your positive reply ..Dont worry sir..Will give you that one lakh whenever you need it after i become a billionaire using your one lakh gift :banana

    Regards
    Meena

    Kamalji,

with modestly assuming knowledge of how corporates work, they put one up in those types of accommodations only when their expected kickbacks are more than 100 times of the expense (a very modest estimation). For MNC's since they are accountable in their own countries for any shady deals done outside the country, this might be a way of paying on the side. and paying 600 euros a night might be a tiny drop in the bucket.

I would go for it since my company is already profiting a hundred times why let them off at a third of the cost and contribute to their profits more?? (here i am assuming at that high exec. level saving a lakh might not be high on my list)

If i am in a philanthropic mood may be take the lakh and give it to charity but through company channels (they contribute matching amount ex. United Way) there by getting the PR (have your cake and eat it too) in the company

Iloved yr thoughts and specially yr last line, that when we can get quality at a cheaper rate then why waste money.Great practical thoughts.Regards.kamal

    Beena ,

I admire the business sense in you.You will turn the lakh in to a million and return the lakh to me without interest.Interesting:hatsoffHats off to u.HAHA.Regards.kamal

    Blondie,

This room costs 6000 Euros and not 600.And yes if the company is milikng the shareholders, then there is no harm in staying in such rooms at their expense.HAHA.Thanks and regards.kamal
