I will be landing US by next week.. I would like to know whether i can bring Tamarind to USA.

Im doubtful as it is not a processed or company packed item??

I need to know same about the fish tamarind.
Do i need to pack it in special covers/ containers??

FYI : I am landing in New York (JFK)

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Nisha,

Good to know that you will be flying next week. Bonvoyage!!!

First time when I cam a year back, I had taken Tamarind (packed ones)..I am not sure if the rules have been changed now.

let us see what others have to say. By the way which airlines are traveling.

    Good Luck.

I have brought them when I travelled, both tamarind and kumkum star (kudampuli). Just packed them in plastic bags. If they ask you about it, tell them that its dried and processed; so it shouldn't be a problem. Even if they won't allow you to carry it, don't worry - you get it here in the Indian stores (home made ones are always special though!)

    hi,

we have also brought the tamarind a year back. i think it should not be a problem. try to pack in a labelled cover to look as if it is shop bought.

I too didn't had any problem. The only thing is you can't carry any food items in the cabin baggage. If you put it in cargo, then you probably wont have any problem. All the best!!!

I always get tamarind in loads when I come back from India and neither do I miss a chance to ask parents visiting to bring it too. Now, I get store bought ones that are neatly packed and labelled. My suggestion would be to avoid home made look kinda packing especially at this point of time where the H1N1 virus and stuff is doing the rounds here and the customs is always having an eye for Indians and Asians as to what they bring.Either get store ones and bring them along with the original packing else if you really cant miss out on the home made one, please wrap it properly and make sure you answer them that its processes and is nothing harmful when you are asked at the clearence.
