    BIG CITY NEIGHBORHOODS

A news report says the neighbor came to know of the death of the next door neighbor from the decomposing smell.

In the not so olden days, the entire neighborhood would know about it at least one hour beforehand unless it was a sudden death in sleep at night. This was possible because they talked among themselves, shared their joys and miseries. They would know of forthcoming weddings or even the due date of the new member coming on the earth. They even knew what was cooking in the next door. They were aware of who is sick and whose days are numbered.

Now at least in matchboxes like flats and segregated big bungalows in the metros people do not know or do not want to know about next door neighbor. Who knows he may be a smuggler or a terrorist or a bootlegger or what not. Most keep to themselves. They do not talk to each other.

Under these situations, I think a dog as a pet is a good idea. The dog when hungry will raise alarms and neighbors will awake.

    Dear Hariji,
Even now things are not that bad here. There is not much social contact among neighbours but when emergency comes they do help...at least most of them. Here indications are paper, milk and maid. Last week in a neighbourhood complex....paper was not picked up, milk packets at door steps....neighbours saw at 10 O' clock. Then pressed the bell, knocked and finally broke open the door. The man was lying unconscious...called the ambulance and took him to hospital and informed the family from his mobile (family was out of city). He is now recovering.
    So...still good samaritans are there.

Good to know that. Situation is much better in some residential complexes. The most vulnerable people are those living alone and not socially mixing type. Some people keep to themselves. I have seen neighbors not on talking terms.

Good. It absolutely necessary to be in good terms with the neighbors as we used to say one can not choose his or her boss in office. Similarly we cannot choose our neighbors. They are the one who will firs respond to our condition before our kith and kins know.

That is really interesting. Most of it applies to me too.
