    Bank Lockers

A few months ago a news item appeared in Hindu that the custodian keyof the Bank Locker and customer keys of a few customers have been duplicated bya team of 4 people in Bombay. Two customers with a criminal motive ,have entered the locker room under the pretext of opening their lockers, have taken an imprint of the custodian & Customer key holes and with the help of a locksmith have prepared duplicate keys successfully after a period of nearly three months with trial & error method. In this caes lock smith himself was a customer. It seem that the visit of a particular lochsmith customer was not noticed by the Bank Authorities, as there is no stipulation for the frequency with which the locker could be operated.

Many of us keep our jewels in the bank and operate the locker occasionally.Though such thefts may be rare,we are gripped with a sense of fear.We pay locker rent in thousands and still safety is at stake. It is felt that the banks do not attach much importance to locker operations unless there is an issue.Recently when we went to operate our locker,we were surprised to see the Accountant handing over the Custodian Key to the Sweeper woman asking her to open our locker. On our return when we pointed out the risks involved, the accountant silenced us saying that it is not the customer's duty to point out his responsibilities.

Indulgence in such crimes may spread to other cities as well.In these days of peak price in gold and silver, the loss will be heavy even if we happen to lose a small chain.Eventually it may not be possible for us to prove the contents in our locker.Fixing cameras inside the locker may even endanger the customers. Some strict regulation is to be enforced by the banks with reference to Identityof the customers, and theduration to be spent by them in the locker. If a signal rings after 10 mts,(the stipulated time) the bank officials may exercise some caution. While so much hue and cryis made about KYC(Know your customer), it is a rude shock to learn about such events. We talk for two or three daysand totally forget and forgive the criminals, thanks for the divine gift of forgetfulness.

Though the bank executives are not involved in this crime,it cannot be denied that had they stipulated timings ,or had they noticed the arrival of the same customers very often, such a huge crime would have been avoided.

There is no safety either at home or at the bank. The demand for jewelsalso seems to be on the increase.Perhaps we have nothing else to do except to pity the affected, who with their savings have been able to procure a few grams of gold with their children in mind. How can a common man be expected to have faith in the Banking System?
