    Dear Anooch
For tulips - can be planted either in pots or ground. If planted in pots, they have to be removed the bulbs and stored in winter in a cool dry place and replanted in late winter again.
For petunia - heavy feeder - requires lots of water and weekly fertilizer.
You didnt say what plant you bought for $20.
Like I said earlier all plants need sunshine water water water and some fertilizers occasionally too.

    Hi Anandchitra:

    Lovely photographs and inspiring too.

Used to live an apartment earlier and had plants in our balcony. Nothing spectacular but made one feel good with greenery closeby.

Just thought I might add this - if you don't get enough sunshine in your balcony, try ornamental plants. Flowers and vegetables need quite a bit of sunshine whereas the ornamental plants tend to do alright with even an hour of sunshine.

That is a very good suggestion. You are right. Not all plants require sunlight. Some ornamental plants and even ferns and hostas could use less or indirect too.

    Dear Anooch
Jasmine requires extra maintenance. Its really a tropical plant. It need to be babied in our winter months. Find out what grows well in your local area and go for those. When you visit your local garden supply stores like home depot or other nurseries, you will only find plants that do well in your area. They will succeed with lesser effort. Also if you know someone growing a plant you like then tips from them will also help.
Keep posting here. Its wonderful to talk to someone on this subject.
