[FONT=&quot]Children and adolescents who suffer from asthma may see their condition becoming worse if they have bad neighbors, says a study that found a correlation between social environment and asthma symptoms.

Asthma is a chronic disorder characterized by shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and tightness of the chest. It is the most common chronic disorder in childhood. Social environment has long been thought to be an important factor in asthma manifestations in youth.

However, very few studies have empirically tested social factors at the family, peer and neighborhood levels and their implications for childhood asthma.

Researchers from the University of British Columbia conducted a study to determine whether, and to what extent, social factors influence asthma symptoms and lung function

Asthma symptoms are greater among children who have less family support and reside in worse neighborhoods, aver researchers from the University of British Columbia

They recruited 78 children with asthma and assessed the extent to which youth perceived support from family, support from peers and problems in their neighborhood, such as crime and violence.

They measured their lung function and assessed their asthma symptoms based on interviews and daily diaries that the subjects kept.

The researchers found a correlation between social environment and asthma symptoms and lung function, reported science portal EurekAlert.

Asthma symptoms were greater among children who reported less family support and lived in worse neighborhoods. Lung function was also poorer among children who reported less family support.

The results published in the latest issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine showed that neighborhood problems and a lack of peer and family support would all relate to greater asthma morbidity.

Nice piece of Information. Bad Neibhourhood or less family support will create depression and anxiety sydrome, which may trigger wheezing..... May be...

Shan & Srivats both of them have wheezing problem.... Also tensions triggers wheezing....

    Good piece of information, Sunkan.
I used to get wheezing in the childhood days whenever there is a major cleaning done involving dust. Even now, if I dust something i get it.
the same is the case with my son, he gets it when we vacuum the carpet.
As Vysan said, maybe the tensions trigger that also....

"Asthma is a chronic disorder characterized by shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and tightness of the chest. It is the most common chronic disorder in childhood. Social environment has long been thought to be an important factor in asthma manifestations in youth " it is true. I also feel that social environment is resposible for asthma in children. soical environment include not maintaining cleanness, formation of dust, poor food intake due to poverty may result in asthma in children.

    dear padma,
poverty could be one of the factors and the rich suffer more, not due to dust alone but due to tensions more, in some it takes the form of stomach pain, heavy bleeding and various other symptoms which the medical field is unable to pinpoint...sunkan
