It could be atopy (Atopic dermatitis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). My children (2 of them) had this. Nothing much to do except keeping the skin moisturized all the time and avoiding irritating clothes. (Rinse during the laundry one extra round and use un-fragranced detergents). Keep the nails short as schratching can cause infections. Sometimes cotton gloves put on during nights.

Any lotion without any fragrances or other irritating ingredients will do. According to studies the mothers diet will not have impact.

    Few things to try
Try switching detergents. Use mild detergents for babies.
    Cotton only
moisturize skin with baby oils - burt bee baby oil, J& Jor coconut oils/jojoba/vit E.
I even keep a mix of all the oils. similarly u have lot of baby lotions

If you have dry itchy red spots, you can use Vaseline. I used on my ped's advice, when she was born.
If baby is small, prefer jojoba as they say small amount of oil goes into skin capillaries and jojoba is safe.

Is you baby recently on Antibiotics ? My baby gets this rash when ever he is on antibiotics. If it has started after giving antibiotics, give him probiotics and try Calendula Ointment on red patches, the ointment is all natural and can applied as needed. For my son it took 3-4 days to show improvement (it was mild for him at that time).

I am using Aquaphor baby cream. Works very well against dry skin. My son stopped scratching after I started using this.
