Thanks again for this wonderful reference!

I have a question, though (don't I always!), what about postpartum bleeding and
the ceremony? I can't imagine how it can be performed on the 11th day from birth. Or is it only a problem if it's held in the temple instead of at home?

Also, what do babies wear for this? I've been trying to find something cute!

    Dear Marisa,
In India, this is conducted only at home, never in the temple.
At home, postpartum bleeding does not matter at all. The baby is made to wear a new dress, thats all.
    Is the baby born, Marisa??:hide:
    Take care.
    Love,
    Chithra.

Sorry for the delay! Yes, the baby was born and we had a small ceremony with the bangles and then went to the temple. So I guess things are all done now for a while.

    Hi Chitra mam and Gayathri,
Thanks for such a lovely post. Very very informative and for someone like me it is very useful...sorry forgot to mention I am married into a Tamil family while I am a Kannadiga and not aware of all the rituals...also the moment I opened this thread, I was a little disappointed as everything was in Tamil and I do not know ABC of Tamil...though I always thought I will learn, I am not too sure about it. But later found that Gayathri Mam has translated for the benefit of a wider audience, I was impressed. This is one site which I am completely addicted to and everyday there is something new to learn and how much ever time I spend browsing this site...I realize that there is so much of info that it will take years for me to digest!! Thanks ladies and Kudos to the team who is doing such a wonderful job!! Love you all!!

    Dear Somya,
    Hearty welcome to IL family!
The tamil threads are very minimal, I assure you.
Go through all the forums & sub-forums in detail. You will be amazed at the wealth of information, our website provides!
    Love,
    Chithra.

I'm coming again with questions! Is there a ceremony among Tamilians for baby's first food? Is it performed in the house or temple? Should I wait to give my baby solids until then? What's traditionally baby's first food? Thanks SO much!

    Dear Marisa,
This custom is more prevalent in Kerala than in Tamil Nadu & is called Annaprasanam. Keralites prefer to do it in Guruvayur.
There is no such tamil custom.
    Love,
    Chithra.

    Hello Chithra mami,

Very informative post. Arrival of a baby serves as a bridge between two families. The
beautiful customs and traditions outlined in our culture, helps to further strengthen the bond.

    With love

    Geeta Bhaskar
