Post natal care in ayurveda way

According to Ayurvedic medicine, choices made the first 42 days after birth influence a woman’s health and ability to mother and partner for the next 42 years. So one should never ignore these 42 days of the life, take the best of every thing. These days are foundation of the upcoming life.

Why these 42 days are so important?

According to ayurveda Vata activity is responsible for the process of child delivery. Vata will be immensely increased soon after delivery. The digestion power, hygiene and immunity will also be very low in the mother. Hence balancing Vata and strengthening the mother is very necessary.

According to modern science, after delivery, the mother’s uterus starts involution (retracting back to its normal size). Lactation slowly begins, mother’s mental health will be little unstable.

    Ayurvedic natal care

    • Oil massage: It helps to strengthen the ligaments, muscles, tendons, joints of the whole body. It soothens skin and relieves pain.
    • Ghee / sesame oil – Based on mother’s convenience in intake, ghee or sesame oil is administered in the dose of 5 – 10 ml twice a day. But giving raw ghee as such might cause digestion problem. Hence it is traditionally advised to give the ghee along with food.
    • Kashayam prepared with Vata balancing herbs like Dashamoola, Bala is administered once or twice a day in the dose of 10 – 20 ml once or twice a day.
    • Warm water or at least boiled and cooled is advised.

Some simple tips to be kept in mind after delivery:

One should go with proper diet and care for herself which will lead to a healthy life for you and your little one. A healthy mother can make a healthy child.

    • In the first few weeks, a mother needs to be relieved of all responsibilities other than feeding the baby and taking care of herself.
    • Sleep when the baby sleeps. This may be only a few minutes rest several times a day, but these minutes can add up.
    • Save steps and time. Have your baby's bed near yours for feedings at night.
    • Many new parents enjoy visits from friends and family, but new mothers should not feel obligated to entertain. Feel free to excuse yourself for a nap or to feed your baby.

    Dear Jyotsna,

A very informative thread. This is going to be helpful for all the new mothers in their hour of need for almost everyone these days are afraid of excessive chemicals around them. I feel that every other baby these days is suffering from some sort of allergy problem. It is a good time to think of alternative methods and our country is so rich in such measures, most of them forgotten and lost to us. This will really come in handy for those who want change their habits and revert to more nature friendly methods.

Congratulations on being nominated to FP of the month by Quebec!

I myself being a Ayurveda Doctor and a mother , I would like to share the importance of Post Natal Care for each women to experience their motherhood at its best.

Post natal care through Ayurveda is considered important especially for the first 45 days post delivery. This is because uterus takes 45 days to shrink to its normal size pre pregnancy.

Due to pregnancy a lot of changes would have happened in your body, such as stretching of ligaments, muscles, inflammation and pain to low back, pain in the upper back due to strain taken post delivery etc. While one changes nappy of their infant or do household chores during post delivery period, pain will be at its peak and the mother feels tired and will have less energy as she wakes up very often during night.

Also some people find that lactation is not enough and it doesn't satisfy the newborn. Newborns as well as moms suffer from colic, bloating and abdominal cramps. This is where Ayurveda comes with a solution in the form of internal medicines like kashayams, tablets, arishtas, lehyams. External therapies like abhyanga, snana and udaraveshtana which is the abdominal binding also should go along with internal medications. If baby is given some amount of massage, yoga and bath, it helps your young one's overall development.

Abhyanga for mother with oil, paste application and bath with herbal powders have to be done with the help of someone at home or from any trained hands.
Soon after delivery, vata increases and later on pitta. So to fasten the process of healing of internal tissues that have got damaged during pregnancy and post delivery all these have to be considered. If you are interested in these medication please let me know. Will provide you with more detailed information.

After delivery, you can take internal and external medications starting from the 7th or 14th day of delivery, depending on normal or caesarian delivery respectively.

Internal medicines like Dhanwantharm kashayam and gulike has to be taken for the first two weeks.

After 2 weeks Dasamoolarishtam+ Jeerakarishtam should be taken for a period of one month along with lehyams like Kurinji kuzhambu lehyam, Thenginpookula rasayanam, Chyavanaprash etc should be taken.

At the same time,External applications with oils like dhanwantharam, murivenna etc can be applied by self or with the help of a trained therapist. After oil massage, herbal hot water bath should be done with Naalpaamaradi choornam which is available in kottakal, AVP, SNA, vaidyaratnam etc.

However some organizations provides postnatal care containing all relevant medicines for external applications. They also provide trained therapists throughout India.

If you are interested to know about the same please let me know.
