    _The Ashok Syndrome:_*
And the *Prithviraj syndrome* have troubled India for a long time!!

*An interesting article by a Retd Army Officer:*

In India, it's never about Ideology.. It is only about Civilisation..

And to put it on record this is why PM Modi faces a massive smear campaign from a powerful Lobby..

But this did not start in 2014.. It started long ago, we have to go back by Centuries to understand this..

India wasn't born in 1947, because unlike many other Countries we got Independence and were not created afresh.. Therefore, what happened *before* 1947 is as important as what happened *after* 1947..

The most underrated event in our History being the *Kalinga War* of 265 BC..

The War changed Ashok, the famous Mauryan Ruler but it also change India for centuries to come..

The Emperor became Pacifist.. Whatever be his own ideology, it is very easy to confuse reluctance to wage War with a senselessly defensive mindset..

For years to come, the Indian Civilisation became utterly defensive..

Succeeding Indian Dynasties and Emperors would avoid expansionism..

But their ability to perceive and pre-empt threats also went down..

Compromise and Forgiveness became the keywords of our Civilisation..

The Ashok Syndrome would soon become the Prithviraj Syndrome..

Indians have been valiant Warriors, but the issue is that of excessive magnanimity.. Prithviraj Chauhan defeated Muhammad Ghori in the 11th century, but let him go.. Later, Ghori defeated Prithviraj and blinded him..

In the course of this thread, you will realise how we would keep getting betrayed just like Prithviraj Chauhan another 10 Centuries later..

Anyway, Prithviraj Chauhan's unnecessary magnanimity allowed Islamic conquest of India..

This, of course, led to Centuries of plunder..

After the Kalinga War, we never achieved a system that would match up to the aggression against Indian Civilisation..

The unnecessarily defensive regime would give way to Islamic conquest, and Islamic conquest would give way to the British Raj..

Needless to mention, the Social thinkers and commoners also became timid about their own Civilisation..

Britishers made us believe that we were Misogynist and Archaic..

Some of our most celebrated Social thinkers relentlessly promoted British Education as a Panacea..

As I told you, everything is about Civilisation.. Every successive regime shamed anyone who tried to stand up for civilisational pride..

British era gave way for the Nehruvian Era.. India's Political leadership again ordained that India would adopt strategic restraint..

China entered our Territory.. So, India's first Prime Minister said, "not a blade of grass grows" in those Barren Mountains..

Of course, no one in the intellectual lobby protested.. Nehru was doing what they wanted him to do.. Be magnanimous to the extent of being self- harming..

Nehru was only continuing what started with the Kalinga War.. Then came Indira.. She suffered the Prithviraj Syndrome.. Won the 1971 War, but gave away the exploits in Shimla Agreement..

Pakistan turned another Ghori.. ISI came up with a Doctrine - bleed India through a thousand cuts..

This doesn't end here.. Vajpayee faced the wrath of the Eco-system for many reasons.. The only thing they don't criticise him for is not crossing the LoC during the 1999 Kargil War.. This is again a manifestation of extreme generosity.. Pakistan could cross the LoC but India would not..

The Parliament attack happened, we didn't retaliate.. Operation Prakram never materialised into anything..

Few years later, 26/11 happened.. But India's then PM Manmohan Singh chose, "Strategic restraint.."

No one in a Powerful Lobby criticised him..

As long as you don't go beyond the Lakshman Rekha that has been drawn by Centuries of timidity, no one will rebuke you..

But then came PM Modi on the stage..!
Pakistan attacked in Uri, so the Para SF caused damage to Terror Launchpads across the LoC..

With the Balakot Airstrikes, he still went several steps further..

    Of course, he is hated..

After several Centuries, India is pre-empting threats..

We had stopped pre-empting in 265 BC, how come we could pre-empt now..

Modi-hate is not about ideology, it’s about Civilisation.!!

I wish and I hope that this Modi succeeds in transforming our mindset for the other Modis' to follow the suit, because one Modi will not be sufficient enough to clear the rot accumulated through Centuries..

*(This is a very well articulated post of Siddharth Gautam)*

Interesting......some Food for thought... for Indians.

    Dear Smt. Jayasala:

A very interesting analysis by the Retd Army Officer. Tainting the Indus valley civilization has been a target for hundreds of years. Every aggressor of India had achieved it through various means. The magnanimity of the Hindu Kingdom facilitated it as well. That is history. Even when Nehru operated as the PM of India, he ruled as though he was a king with very little resistance from the intellectuals. That is what led former PM Indra Gandhi to declare emergency, arrest opposition leaders and defy the order of the Allahabad Court.

I remember Sam Pitroda talking to us when I worked for C-DAC. He declared Indians as ones who barely resist anything that would result in conflict. When a young engineer said our organization is set up as a not-for-profit society and hence can't sell super computers, he replied, "East India company came to sell tea to India and eventually conquered India" because of thinking outside the box. When he was asked how the Indians are successful overseas and how they blend quickly, he replied, "Indians are about compliance and they could adapt themselves to any change that happens socially, economically, emotionally and intellectually. That is why they are so successful in the software industry as they embrace changes to the technologies so quickly".

PM Modi thinks differently. He is a leader and not a follower of previously set foreign policies or economic growth. He is willing to think independently and make his cabinet think independently. As this goes against compliance attitude of set precedence, there is a lot of resistence. Only weakness I see in him is his tendency to bask in glory even before the end result is achieved.

A very insightful observation. It’s true that we have a Prithviraj syndrome. Very recent example is Modi doling out covid vaccines to African nations when barely 20 % or even less Indian were vaccinated in the beginning of the year. A lot of badmouthing happened with the Delta variant wave in Indian media. But what was shocking was the fervour in which rest of the world jumped in to help India. This is the respect Prithviraj syndrome has earned us over time. Today India has gained this respect worldwide because we followed the rules during our wars.

Western media did not even bother to find out covid situation in Pakistan till today. That’s the respect they have earned with their Ghori like deeds over time.

Whether the leader does it with a noble intention or just to bask in glory, ultimate burden is on citizens.

    • It was not merely civilisational aspect. Our kings before the Mughal encroachments were fighting each other. When Mughals came, one or the other sided with the Mughals to fight our own other kings. Such utter selfishness paid us dearly. Similarly, some of our kings sided with the British against the other kings and paid for it. Internicine quarrels, hatred and jealousy paid us. Now some States are fighting against some other ones. Such shameful elements are tolerated in our country.

When battle of Haldighati was going on, a commander asked the C-in-C, how we're going to segregate the dead bodies of the rival armies. He cooly replied,' It's not necessary. On both sides Rajputs are fighting'.
    • What's Ashoka syndrome and what's Prithviraj syndrome?
After Ashoka throughout to Harshvardhan, the last great Hindu king, ahimsa paramo dharma: was our credo (except during Samudragupta's rule in Gupta period during 4th century AD when he brought the entire country under his rule). This Ahimsa policy emasculated our martial ardour.
Secondly we always had Panipat syndrome i.e. we wont take preventive measures on the border but would wait for the enemy to come to Delhi border and then only we deigned to fight.
Even Mohammed Gauri came to Taravadi near Panipat and had a fight with Prithviraj Chauhan.
For a long time Indian Army was not getting the roads near McMahon line repaired or constructed. Why? It felt that it would facilitate movement of Chinese troops. Once a Defence Secretary remarked to Army,' Are you going to fight the Chinese when they come to Chandini Chowk?'
Only recently, the infrastructure near McMahon line has been strengthened.
    • On individual issues, forgetting and forgiving may be an elixir. But when the question of defending the country arises, the army has to stand firm.Neither forgiving nor forgetting may yield the desired results.

Khrushchev was escorted to Bhkra Nangal dam under construction during Nehru time. After looking at the site of the dam proximity to pak border he said sucha colossal bridge so close to pak. Nehru should have planned small dams at various places away from pak.

Mughals brought india to a total downfall.
Destroyed lots of beautiful Temples and constructed tombs, mosques over it.

The burning of the nalanda University is another example of the prithviraj syndrome.
Bakhtiyar khilji had a strange illness which his scholars couldn't treat.
So an Ayurveda scholar from nalanda treated and cured him.
After recovering khilji was shocked by the fact that an Indian scholar had more knowledge than his princes.
After this he decided to destroy the roots of Buddhism and Ayurveda.
He set fire to the great library of nalanda and burnt around 9 million manuscripts.
    Nalanda burnt for months.
Imagine the amount of knowledge, science, technology that was destroyed.
India was very ahead in architecture, metallurgy at that time.
The ancient Temples like tanjore Brihadeswara , Kailua temple are a living proof of it.
