    Hi Ennaye,

I too had a problem with this last year. Initially I was put on oral vitamin D granules (Calcirol) to be taken once a week for 4 weeks. After that when the levels did not show any signs of budging, I was prescribed Vit D shots for a brief period. The levels came up after that and since then I am on a maintenance dose of Calcirol once a month.

Generally speaking half an hour in the sun should be sufficient to generate our own Vit D.

Thanks Satchi, for sharing your experience. I have started with once a week capsule and I have been asked to get the levels tested after 12 weeks. Lets see how it goes.

All the best. I am sure it will settle down eventually. :) Half my problem is I hate going out in the sun. I get a migraine and so avoid bright sunshine. If you don't mind going out in the sun, nothing like it.

Hi, Besides the prescribed medication, please make sure to go out just when the sun is out. The early morning sun rays literally goes through your skin. This is the best remedy for Vit. D deficiency.

    Hi Friends
I had very bitter experiance with this vit.D.
My Daughter ( 10.6) yrs old complained of Thigh pain in June,2012. She also told she didnot fall or hit anywhere. She plays Cricket & Football. So we thought that she could have been hit by ball & she missed to notice it.
Even after a week the pain didnot subside. So we consulted orthopaedician, took X-Ray. It was normal & so the doctor gave painkillers & told it is only muscle catch & will go off in 2 weeks.
Even after 1 month the pain didnot go. infact she started complaining more pain in the Thigh & started limping .
Again we consulted the ortho specialist in India just to see what is wrong. He took X-ray. & MRI Scan.
Told there is some fluid collection in the HIP Joint. It is commen in European Countries. It will go off automaticlly in 6- 8 weeks.Still not convinced I consulted more than 10 Paediatricians & Orthopaedicians. All told the same but nobody could pinpoint the reason for the fluid collection in Hip Joint for a child. With so much confusion I gave up & prayed she will be OK.
Within 5 days of all this confusion, while about sit in a chair, she accidentally fell & sat on the floor. All hell broke & She had Hip Joint Dislocation & underwent emergency Major surgery to fix the joint. She is immobilised for 8 weeks until October 5th .Even after this, they were sure that this because of some hormonal problem & doing all blood tests without diagnosing the fact. After 4 weeks only we found out it is because of Vit.D defficiancy. Her level was 4.Now they advised she has the same risk in other-side also until she fully grows ( up to 15 yrs of age)
Really I worry if it is the situvation for me (being a Doctor myself) I think about common public.
Please all of you be careful about your health.
They gave her Vit.D Sachets. Not yet rechecked.Only nextweek, when they remove the plaster of paris bandage we'll know her recovery status.Praying God helps us.
    Thank you.
    Have a nice day.

    Dear Ennaye,
Good to know about your diagnosis, becuase Vitamin D is easy to take and assimilate. Also go for Magnesium and Vitamin B12 tests. Sometimes, deficiency in this also causes problems.
    Take care.

    Dear Prema,
Sad to know about your DD.
However, Vitamin D deficiency is easily overcome by taking more than 1000 iu everyday. Also, i suggest checking Calcium and magnesium levels in the blood for the little girl to be on the safe side.
    Take care.

    Dear Prema,
Feel bad that your DD had to go through so much simply for Vit D deficiency which if detected earlier is easy to handle.I started having pain in the hip about a year ago. Considering age related problems I put it down to sciatica or onset of arthritis. Then BP started fluctuating. Mornings very low and evenings very high. Doc gave medication for high BP but I could never get up in the morning because of low BP.No doc was willing to believe my problems and one doc told me to increase my BP med.
Mentioned it to a close friend who is a dermatlogist. She advised me to get Vit D tested. It came out pretty low at 5.9.Immediately started taking capsule of strength 60000 once a week. At 8 weeks tested again, level was 32.4. Now will get tested again next week at the end of 3 weeks. Am feeling much better. And very grateful to my friend who made me check VitD levels. I had seen at least 6 docs but they all could not tell me of effects of Vit D.Now I tell all my friends to check this Vit levels. Of course, the docs still do not want to give any importance to this.Even went to an endocrinologist and she told me why I was so concerned with Vit D levels.
Amazing that simple things docs ignore.
Please take care and praying that your DD gets well soon.

    Dear GeethaMR,
Thank U for the advice. Had calcium levels checked that is ok, B12 also is ok. Have not checked for magnesium.Do U think the mag in multivitamin tablet is enough? Any foods that can be taken for magnesium?
