@MalStrom One question about the lasagna gardening: If I start building it up now with dry leaves, grass clippings, some compost, some bonemeal and some clayey soil I have from some digging I did and vegetable scraps from our kitchen, can I plant now itself or do I need to wait till next growing season - for all the material to decompose and become soil-like?

You can start now but I would mix everything and turn it over before you plant. If you leave it till next year it will develop on its own but right now it’s better to give it a little help.
If you are interested in this method you may also want to look up straw-bale gardening.
